If Turner returns to starting by April, I shall eat my shoes with glee. It'd be quite the Turne round.
Three bad keepers don't make a good one. Actually, I still think it's the keeper coach. Forest had a crappy defense before. Crappy defense plus crappy keeping is a lot worse than just crappy defending.
I'm just hoping Turner can do enough in whatever games he has left to show enough to have some interest come summer whether it's in the Championship or Bundesliga or Eredivisie.
His wages are going to be a significant obstacle to that. And NF are going to need a No. 2 to back up Sels. Since Vlacho-whatever has proved a complete bust but does have silverware and a CL pedigree, I'd imagine he'll be the one they try to move on, if he isn't trying himself.
❗️ If Odysseas Vlachodimos has no satisfying game time, he will leave Nottingham Forest in summer 🔴@NFFC#NFFC #NottinghamForest— Giannis Chorianopoulos (@choria80) February 13, 2024
Apparently a wayward shot from Gonzalo Montiel broke the nose of Matt Turner’s wife during practice: https://www.msn.com/en-gb/sport/foo...ate-broke-her-nose-during-warm-up/ar-BB1igehk
At this level, I imagine a good keeper coach could help someone improve, but I doubt a bad one could make all of them worse. But I've never been a bad Premiership keeper (or a good one).
Anybody watch the game? 4 goals conceded, but based on what I've read they weren't really Sels' fault - the defense was shambolic. Any takeaways from Sels' performance?
He's better with his feet than Turner but has yet to make any big saves. More goals conceded 8, than saves 7. No howlers but he's not saving much. Small sample size of course.
Agree with DCU1984 - that's also how it looked to me. I wonder if Turner might have done a tiny bit better on some of the shots. It might have just been that he would get a hand/foot to the ball on the way in. And who knows, that might have made people more likely to blame him for the goals. ...doing just enough better to get blamed for not doing even better?
Like that penalty people blamed him for not saving because it went underneath him as he dove. He got sent the wrong way and somehow stopped his entire body momentum then dove the correct way. He shouldn't even have been in the position he was to get as close as he did - if he had just let his momentum carry him to the wrong side he wouldn't have gotten any blame. Instead, because he did better, he got blamed for not doing even better. With that said, yes - Turner has been bad this season and completely deserved to lose the starting spot. I'm not being an apologist, just pointing out an interesting facet of fans watching and interpreting performances. It doesn't just happen with keepers - "he should have finished that" (well, without a world class run and touch he wouldn't even be in the position to finish).
Given how shaky he was and how little the team seemed have confidence in him (Turner), just being more assured with his feet is huge.
Oh I see... When Forest gets rocked for 4 goals and Sels is the GK, it's the defense's fault. But when Turner is GK, it's his fault no matter what. ....said with a little bit of sarcasm and a little bit of truth.
Sometimes it takes 3 different starting GKs all failing in similar ways to reveal a truth... but on the other hand, only one of those GKs is a yank
It's absolutely this. Since their promotion in 22/23, they've brought in 6 different keepers, each of whom was expected to compete for the starting role: Hennessey Navas Dean Henderson Matt Turner Vlachodimos Sels None of them hit 2000' between the sticks. It might not be the GK coaching staff, but someone in their backroom massively overvalues the position.
