And I think this is fair. Unfortunately for Turner, the game has changed during his career. No longer is the game about the GK punting the ball long to make a 50/50 ball at the midfield stripe, its about making the ball your team's friend, and keeping it. And unless he can prove that he can handle the ball at his feet, he'll forever be limited as a player, because his options and opportunities will be limited.
If you think "ManU would be better off if Onana was stopping more shots" is wrong... well, we'll just disagree on the whole "maths" and "how you get points" thing then.
Oh…I’m decidedly on the “Matt…keep cashing those checks until your contract runs out” train. He’ll make more on the remainder of this contract than he’ll make in all other years he’ll play professionally….before and after.
I know its controversial, but ManU would be better off if they had a better team, full stop. They're not EPL quality at the CB spot, nor the #6, which is why they gave up 3 goals to POOl the other day, like a $5 whore. On top of that, they don't have a manager who can play a different way, based on their roster's weaknesses. None of those things have anything to do with the GK's footskills, nor anything to do with shot stopping. In fact, NO GK, in the entirety of the history of the game would have been likely to have stopped POOl from putting 3 on ManURE at Old Trafford the other day.
I remember Friedel having okay foot skills but both would have been fine because…insane goalie confidence. Turner is just too nice. Those guys would have fought their defenders if they made them look bad with crap passes. Howard let Manu pressure get to him some but he would have found a good spot I’m sure.
Work through this season - Carabao Cup starts, probably FS Cup starts plus MNT games - and see if Henderson gets injured or suspended. Summer is when he has the real decision: another season as an on-loan #2 in the Prem or take the paycut in exchange for a starting gig. Forest didn't pay that much for him and it'll be 50% depreciated by the summer anyway so I doubt they'll ask for much of a transfer fee.
I think Casemiro is pretty washed up at the 6 but Ugarte should be fine once her gets settled. I do actually think Martinez and De Ligt is a good combo at center back though not a fan of the depth behind them (though Yoro will be good in the future). There’s also still a few injuries they are dealing with. Their big problem against Liverpool was primarily Casemiro being completely washed. But also Ten Hag just doesn’t seem like the right coach and I don’t know that he lasts much longer (though long enough for Pochettino to sign the contract with the USMNT).
I think if you took Turner and put him in an era in which all he had to do is play the ball long and he could just stay on his line with no need to do any sort of sweeper keeper actions, he’d be a very good goalie in such an era.
Maybe - but I also think he was a decent goalie before his confidence cratered. That play against Liverpool where he came way out of the box baffling everyone - that wasn’t a foot skills issue. That play where he set up a poor wall? Plays where he gets beat near post? These aren’t foot skill issues. And passing to the other team is a problem in any era. It’s possible his confidence cratered because more is being asked of him on the ground - but I personally think he’s passable skill wise - it’s just his judgement has been terrible and I blame that partly on inexperience and partly on confidence. Not sure I agree he’d be fine in another era.
I wonder if there is any off field issues with Turner. I can’t say that this is the issue. But his confidence did collapse when he had his kid.
He can play the ball long well enough when he can step into it without pressure but you don't always have that luxury. Also, in the good old days of simpler keeper times, goalies didn't get the kind of protection they get today. Matt does well claiming high balls but he is a slender dude and those ol' rainy nights in Stoke of yore could get pretty rough. e cou
In terms of technical skills and physical development, that's mostly true. The question is whether last season's problems are down to having been "found out" at this level or whether a case of the yips has buggered up his decision-making. The latter can be fixed, in which case he'll turn out to be a serviceable GK for a one of those netherworld teams in the Prem's Bottom 6 or the Championship's Top 6. If it's just not being good enough, then he's got a decision to make in July; stick to Forest and collect the money or write off $2 million for the sake of PT
He's 30 so this is his last big contract and he made peanuts ($375k) in his final MLS season. Come July, he would probably get around $600k gross on a 3.5 year deal in MLS, which is less than half of his net £1.0-1.2m net salary at Forest. Are you that patriotic?
The big day approaches ... Sat Sept 14 Crystal Palace v Leicester City (T-15th, with CP et al, on 1 pt from 3 matches) Tues Sept 17 QPR v Crystal Palace - EFL Cup 3rd Round* Sat Sept 21 Crystal Palace v Machester Utd (T-13th) ++++++++++++ * The 4th round is not until the end of October, but every match helps.
I had a bad feeling he wouldn't get any time with this loan short of a Henderson injury. The hurdle to beat out the #1 is much higher in this situation and with only one extra competition it's not like the owned-asset needs rest.
Is it possible he hasn't been there long enough to be ready for them? keeper isn't as tough to integrate as a field player but he came at the end of the window and left for US camp. I'm doubtful that's the case but will see if it happens again after he's there longer.
