He’s not going to make any higher than his current contract. And he’s not very good (relative to the caliber of players at his position in the league), so it all depends on how bad he wants to play. Will he shed salary to go compete for a No. 1 job in a tier 2 league? Or does he rot on the bench with a fat wage and ensure he gets dropped for the WC? Only time will tell. What really blows is that he seems like a decent guy, so I’m still hoping it works out somehow.
It does depend on how badly he wants to play but it also depends on how much Forest want to get his wages off the books. @bshredder would know whether it's true or not but another loan deal supposedly fell through at the last minute and he went to Palace because they were the only paying option left. He's very well paid for a #2 and overpaid for a third-choice. Put that on top of creditable performances in the cups and you have a recipe for a loan deal being wrapped up relatively easily in the summer. My guess would be a newly-promoted side or a promotion challenger in the Championship
I would guess that if no one agrees to pick up his full price Forest would have to subsidize or sell. otherwise they'd have to pay the full price for what could be their 3rd keeper.
Historically, English teams had the parent club pick up 50% of the player's base wages and the borrowing club covering the rest, plus accommodation where relevant, and pay their own bonuses. A club paying more than that was usually a case of the borrowing side really wanting a specific player or the parent team either wanting a disruptive player out of the dressing room or helping a surplus-to-requirements/not-the-same-after-injury veteran move on. With the rise of loan fees, plus the post-90s trend of EPL sides sending young players out on loan for development, that's faded a bit but I'd still expect Forest to pay about 40% of his salary. If they make the CL, I could see him being offloaded for about €5 million if Matt gets a long-term deal elsewhere. In that case, Matt would likely drop his salary fairly considerably in exchange for a starter's status.
Forest with a big win against Spurs tonight in their chase for a CL spot and Sels came up with several big saves, especially late on. That prompted this remark from the Guardian's minute-by-minute writer: what a season Sels has had. Matt Turner wasn’t quite good enough, but even so, the extent of the upgrade is unusual.
Not if you give an highly-regarded tactician with excellent man-management skills a full pre-season to work on his preferred system. That tactician being a former GK himself who'd won the EL and the CL with a defensively-minded team (Jose Mourinho's Porto) has helped Sels too. I'd expected them to do fine this season on the back of a much-improved defense. It's the outfield play that's the real surprise: when they counter, they do it with a lot of improvisation. The question is whether Nuno is willing to give Matt another shot, though surely as a #2, and whether Matt would be interested in that. If not, there's no better person Matt could ask for career advice: Nuno was a career #2 himself whose Porto salary priced him out of becoming a starter in Portugal's mid-table or even the bottom of La Liga
Even with the defensive upgrades, and the "adjustment effect" the turnaround for NF and Sels has been pretty impressive. Just a completely different team and in the handful times I've watched, Sels has generally look more confident and sharper than he or Turner did last year on their best days. Nice to see some newer faces in the upper reaches of the table.
Turner on the bench today in the FA cup semifinal; great shot of him talking w/ Palace no .1 Dean Henderson on the way back out for the second half.
I feel the sentiment, but Palace wanted to win their first major honor. In that case you don't keep the prized stallion in the stable. I thought Henderson was excellent in all three matches and both get a winner's medal.
The cup is the whole ball game. They could have burned a few league games in Turner with not much ill effect more easily.
One thing that was quite visible was the chemistry between Matt and Henderson on the day, on Cup Final day and on-field with the defense during his Cup appearances. He's obviously got the stereotypical "good guys to have in the dressing room, those Yanks" vibe down pat. He's a decent Gk and a good guy. He'll find a good berth but starter means dropping down a level.
They're what, 7 pts clear of Everton with better GD? Turner coulda potbgw-ed 2 losses and a tie and they'd be in the same slot. and that's with 3 ties in the last 5 games. Not that anyone does this, and I'm not seriously suggesting they should, but they already had their spot locked with 2 league games to go and could have started the waterboy last week. The can catch B'mouth and Fulham if they beat 'Pool and B'mouth doesn't win and Fulham lose, so they do have that, I guess, but no one below can or could catch them for at least last game and this.
If nothing to play for, NF would more likely play a club affiliated water boy than a loanee who is gone at end of season. .
The Cup was their opportunity to win a trophy. Once they reached the semis, the opportunity became real and it was time to field the strongest side in every competition to get the team in sync for the Cup final. Playing Turner would have been an indulgence. Today, the final day of the season, with nothing at stake is another story. It'd be nice to see Matt getting the start.
Yeah. If 'pool decides to take summer vacation early they could technically jump to 10th. Pretty unlikely Turner gets tossed a bone today anyway. Meanwhile, if you happen to be somewhere in the UK with a helicopter, here are your YA choices.
