Yes, so why did the Revs sign him from Lyon then, and use Targeted Allocation Money to fit under the salary cap?

The world - and MLS - is full of GKs who are as good as him and earn 40% of what he does.

That, while the UK and international norm is for the parent club to pick up no more than 50% of a loanee's salary

 

I mean at the salary the question is relevant but he has always had a really high save % in MLS. Hes a very good goalie at MLS level.

 

This one is easy: the revs aren't a very well managed franchise behind the scenes. Outside of 2020 and 2021, they've been middling-to-bad: In their last 10 seasons, the revs have missed the playoffs 6 times. Farthest they went is the semis in 2020, which is why I counted it as successful along with the 2021 Shield-winning season.

Now, all this said, anyone want to guess who won MLS' 'Keeper of The Year' award in 2021?

But the duo of @zlatan_but_a_car and @twoolley nailed it. He's overpaid by the standard of MLS goalkeepers because New England is badly run, but he is an elite MLS goalkeeper. This season, in the G-xG stat, he's 3.5 goals better than any other goalkeeper in the league, totalling 8.8 fewer goals conceded than expected. Probably an unsustainable pace, but that's worth .63 goals per game so far - how much would someone pay for a 21-goal striker?

 

After his performance against Turkey, gotta figure a return to Europe is a distant memory.

 

I remember back then, 1M would get you a blue chip player.

 

Considering all he's said in interviews and on the HBO Max documentary, he's def exceeded his own expectations.

 

I doubt that game will figure much in anyone's calculations. A scratch team assembled to play a dead rubber against an opponent with something (pride) to play for is bound to be shaky at the back, leaving a GK exposed.

The real obstacle to a return to Europe is his age. He turned 32 last month and it's hard to see anyone worth moving back for - Top 5 or a top Tier 2 side - offering his current salary plus a transfer fee for a 32 year old GK, or offering more than a 2 year deal if they were.

With a long-term deal from the Revs reported to be in the offing, he'll be better off taking that and ending his career in MLS.

 

He should turn down the money for the Norwegian second division obviously.

 

lol, Steffen is still on $1.1m in Colorado, I'm sure Turner will be able to find something similar in MLS. Only question is if the revs aren't ready to meet that (I think they are), will they be a stick in the mud about letting his rights go?
