Five pages later, he started on the bench today.

He started out with so much promise. I wonder what would have been had he gone to a team that wanted him and played him from day one. I know Chelsea threw him into a game pretty soon after he arrived, but that was the end of that. Bogey Land. If he goes cheap, maybe Kompany will take him back.

With aAbramovic racing for the exits, it's extremely unlikely that Chelsea's new sugar daddy is going to fund a loan army on anything like the same scale, especially for players who have zero chance of playing for Chelsea of bringing in a worthwhile transfer fee.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him released to anyone willing to take on his salary. And if he values his professional development, he should be giving very serious thought to a "by mutual consent deal" (Chelsea pay 50-60% of what's due to him and he becomes a free agent). He's made minimal progress since leaving Arnhem and has nobody invested in his development. That won't change unless and until he takes control of his own destiny

So with Roman Abramovich/Chelsea being subject to sanctions, there is an increasingly good chance Miazga will be at Chelsea next season, and may even get to play. The club is not allowed to purchase, sell, or loan any players during the duration of the sanctions.

So once Miazga returns to Chelsea this summer, they can't loan him out again, and he may be in the mix for Chelsea defense. They won't be able to sign new defenders, and some of their current defenders may leave on free transfers.

The contracts for CBs Ruddiger and Christensen expire this summer. That will leave CBs Silva, Malang Sarr, and Chalaboah on the roster, in addition to Mbuyamba (Chelsea u-23).

Other CBs out on loan who will be returning to Chelsea this summer include Ampadu (21, currently at Venezia) and Clarke-Salter (24, currently at Coventry in the Championship). So Miazga should be able to compete for a fourth CB spot at Chelsea. Or else be stuck with the reserves.

Until the club is sold, which is expected in weeks.

If the club can afford his salary while under sanctions. Given that e.g. merchandise sales have been blocked until further notice, that's not exactly a given

But it's unclear if UK government will allow the club to be sold, or where the proceeds of any sale would go. They won't let Roman get any money from selling the club. A lot still unknown.

The club can still get money from TV broadcasters, so hopefully still has the money to pay players. Expenses will go down with expiring contracts as well. If they can't pay Miazga, they won't be able to pay anyone else either. UK government won't let that happen.

With an Abramovich personal loan of £1.5 billion sitting on the Balance Sheet?

More like months, for that issue alone

    Merchandise sales, suspended
    New ticket sales, suspended
    Shirt sponsor has bailed
    TV money status, unclear

They really may not be able to pay him, or a raft of others

If Matt starts actually playing for them, it's a sign the club is in real trouble.

The pandemic couldn't make it happen but sanctions sure will. You gotta figure Matt is salivating at the thought.

Mods, change the title of the thread. At this point it sounds like sarcasm.

9 matches left to go and it seems quite likely they'll be relegated so maybe he'll get some matches to end the season.

The Alaves coach is a shortie. I can see Matt poking fun at him in the locker room and getting himself canned over it.

I don’t think Matt is persona non grata. He is clearly the 3rd CB and plays when one of the starters is out.

3rd-choice CB for the 2nd-bottom side that's five points from safety (6 if you count the largeish GD) with no wins in the last five games and only one in the last 10.

With the 3rd-worst defence in the league, they desperately need a shakeup at the back, but he's obviously not seen as a part of any solution.

    Oh, and he's 26 already.

That's another way of saying that he's not very good. Not very good at all.

He also looks positively stoned in that pic, maybe this is the culprit for the club's lack of success?
