Just posting to confirm Matt's transfer to Rapid (second team):

22 ST Matt Luzunaris 06.09.89 185 2009 SV Wienerberg USA

I think that's his smilin' mug in the back row, second from right:

Match reports note that Luzunaris was subbed out injured in the 80th minute a month ago (Aug 21). Turns out he suffered a ruptured ligament. Was expected to be unavailable for several weeks. No word on whether he's returned yet.

    Good luck to him.

Shame he didn't make the U-20 team.

A new article previewing tomorrow's match against the Admira Amateurs says Luzunaris is expected to slot back into the starting eleven following recovery from his injury. Five week turnaround for a ligament injury must be considered a blessing.

Luzunaris is indeed back in action. Came on at the half and assisted the opening goal of a 2-0 home win against the Admira Amateurs.

Haven't updated the trials and tribulations of Matt Luzunaris for a couple of months...

Though he wasn't scoring much, Luzunaris was playing regularly for the Rapid Vienna Amateurs until Oct 23, when he was sidelined with another injury. During the sixth of seven straight victories for the team, he was taken to the hospital at halftime with a severe sprain on his right foot.

Luzunaris hasn't played since (winter break started Nov 13). The team's fortunes changed as well, as they only earned two points in the last three matches.

Hopefully he will be fully healed by the time the winter break is over and can start playing again.

Seems Luzunaris has recovered since the break. He's been starting at forward for the Rapid Amateurs, playing 70-75 minutes the last two matches.

    Appears Luzunaris is coming home:

    • While the signing of forward Ellis McLoughlin was made official this week, an announcement concerning the other young striker looking to join the Earthquakes, 22-yead old Matt Luzunaris, is still forthcoming. On a reserve contract with SK Rapid Wien in Austria, a league official revealed that MLS has received his ITC and an agreement is being finalized.

Interesting yet sad story in the San Jose Mercury News about Matt and his girlfriend Austen, who's fighting cancer. Provides the answer to the question why Matt returned to the US from Europe.

Add my prayers for Austen to those of the San Jose Ultras!

Best wishes to Matt and Austen. That stem cell treatment does show promise, and hopefully will work for her.

Austen Everett (a soccer player herself, she at U-Miami) lost her battle with cancer. It was a public struggle, and Matt played an active role in helping raise awareness for her illness and her fight against it -- in addition, of course, to his private role as her fiance. My condolences to him and both of their families.
