They want a new striker, they expressed that already. As soccerfreak said, Forssell is their favourite candidate, but I don't see this happen. Ketelaer and Skoubo have no chance under Fach, the two van's don't deliver so far and Sverkos is not constant enough yet. But admittedly I can't imagine Mathis playing together with van Lent.
That would be kind of funny. With those two, you would only need to resod very small portions of the field.
not sure why all the references to Scottish football, but the one thing you WILL get in Scotland is 22 men working hard for the entire match. They are a bunch of fireeaters out there. If Clint's problem is not working hard enough, they aren't going to want him there. That said, I think he could do quite well in any number of European leagues. HE should look for an incentive-heavy deal, to make himself more marketable.
CLint mentioned or it was mentioned in the article that he has interest from English, German and Scottish teams.
It's probably a little more instructive to break things down a bit. Here's his international stats by year: Code: Year GP/GS Min G A 2003 12/7 742 1 0 2002 15/10 899 7 3 2001 6/5 440 2 3 2000 2/2 180 1 2 1999 2/0 35 0 0 1998 1/1 69 0 0 Tot. 38/25 2365 11 8 The point being is that for both club and country he's been way off form as of late. The benching at the World Cup seem to really put him off his feed and he hasn't recovered. He's scored once since the World Cup, against Canada in the first game this year. He has since gone 11 caps without scoring.
Mathis needs a fresh start. A good fit with a mid-level Euro club could be just the ticket. He still has a lot of skills and he can reinvent himself somewhere far from the American shores. I wouldn't put it past him, but he's going to have to work his ass off, and that's what makes me a bit skeptical he'll pull it off.
Agreed. I can't see Clint even in Europe where players are more professional in their attitudes towards the game raising his level of professionalism. That's too bad.
You just never know what you're going to get out of Clint. It's not just his game that's unpredicable. I would be real surprised to see him back in MLS, and given his talent he'll probably latch on to a pretty good side, either a mid-table EPL club, a good Scottish club, or in the Eng. 1st division. I really think that if he does have a little interest abroad it should light a fire under his ass to get everything together and be the player he can be.
right, but I was detecting an undercurrent of "he doesn't work hard anymore, he's not good enough to play in England or Germany so he'll have to settle for Scotland. I have a hunch given the chance, he will turn things around. He strikes me as someone who is not so good in a situation he doesn't care about, but very good in one where he does.
I think your assessment is right. He wasn't happy in MLS, wanted out, and wasn't motivated to the top of his game. Rumored that Craig Sharon has set up something for him in England, and I'd still take him at West Ham.
MATHIS SET FOR ENGLISH TALKS From SkySports: http://msn.skysports.com/skysports/article/0,,7-1111430,00.html
"It is not yet known who the interested parties are, but the likes of Blackburn, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Bolton, Everton and Birmingham are all thought to be possible destinations for the America" Blackburn: andy cole, Matt Jansen and Dwight "Porno" Yorke Boro: Maccarroni and who? Newcash: Shearer, Bellamy, Bolton: non-descript Everton: some one known as ...Rooney, Fergie? Birmingham: Morrison, Dugarry, Stern John, Luciano Figeroa, Kirovski... how about West Ham?
If its hype, gotta give it to the agent (he's doing a good job)... BTW- Anyone catch the "pied piper" Rodney Marsh advertisment...he's got a site with old NASL photos (rodmarsh.com).....you know, back when Florida teams drew GREAT for soccer...
Out of them lot, these two stand out; Boro just lost Malcolm Christie out with a long term injury and they said they are looking for another striker in the winter window because of this. Bolton are always after free transfer players and are also willing to give a chance to someone.
Mathis Set for English Talks http://skysports.planetfootball.com/article.asp?id=172560&cpid=218 "Mathis, though, is now out-of-contract with MLS and is free to talk terms with other clubs, and the interest from England is intense."
