So, Mathis is clearly our best player. But by how much? I didn't think he'd be sitting there percentage points ahead of an 18 year old rookie and an a league journeyman for points per minute played. Code: Player GP GS Min Goals Assists Points Goals/g Points/g Goals/min Points/min Clint Mathis 21 21 1929 9 1 19 0.43 0.90 0.0047 0.0098 Amado Guevara 24 24 2174 3 10 16 0.13 0.67 0.0014 0.0074 Mike Magee 28 19 1702 7 2 16 0.25 0.57 0.0041 0.0094 John Wolyniec 23 12 1242 5 2 12 0.22 0.52 0.0040 0.0097 Mark Lisi 22 19 1694 0 9 9 - 0.41 0.0000 0.0053 Steve Jolley 23 22 2104 4 0 8 0.17 0.35 0.0019 0.0038 Ricardo Clark 27 27 2500 3 0 6 0.11 0.22 0.0012 0.0024 Jaime Moreno 11 7 517 2 0 4 0.18 0.36 0.0039 0.0077 Craig Ziadie 21 19 1823 1 2 4 0.05 0.19 0.0005 0.0022 Eddie Gaven 10 5 516 1 1 3 0.10 0.30 0.0019 0.0058 Jacob LeBlanc 6 1 135 1 0 2 0.17 0.33 0.0074 0.0148 Eddie Pope 20 20 1724 0 2 2 - 0.10 0.0000 0.0012 Richie Williams 26 26 2337 0 2 2 - 0.08 0.0000 0.0009 Tim Howard 13 13 1223 0 1 1 - 0.08 0.0000 0.0008 So Mathis is at .0098 points per minute, just ahead of Wolyniec at .0097 and Magee at .0094 (Le Blanc in limited minutes aside). He's scored 9 goals this year, 4 goals last year. Injuries and nats duty aside, he is tied on points (29) in his last two years (35 games) with Faria's single season of 28 games last year. Not a good stat for Metro.
Does it bother ANYONE else that ABMOD is one freakin' ten-thousandth of a percentage ahead of Tim Howard in scoring per minute? You've got to be kidding me -- he plays in the midfield. Talk about absent offense.
i think you should bear in mind that wolyniec is usually coming in after the defenders have played 80 summer minutes...
I think you should bear in mind that Magee is all of 19 years old and Wolyniec had never scored more than a single goal in any MLS season before this year; not exactly daunting competition for Clint.
Two thoughts: 1. I think bluedaddy19's point is worth considering ... could somebody break down Magee's numbers as a starter vs. as a sub? 2. If we want to make a valid comparison, should we factor out PK goals (50% of Moreno's scoring)? Should we also deduct points for Mathis's two missed PK's?
Stats are important of course. But one quick strike by Mathis or Jusko in a big game and we are all jumpin an high 5in each other. Keep POSITIVE!!!
I only did this for magee, but it would be better if somebody else would do it for Wolyniec. I came up a few minutes short in my calculations, but I imagine they're pretty accurate. In 233 minutes as a reserve, Magee has scored 3 goals and 1 assist, for a 2.70 points/90 average; however, one of these goals was scored in a game against Columbus where he came in at the 23rd minute for Jaime Moreno; in every other instance that Magee has come on as a sub he has come on well into the second half. Subtracting out these 67 minutes and the goal, however, give pretty much the same average, 2.71 points/90, .030 points/minute. In his 1447 minutes as a starter, plus 67 as a pseudo starter, Magee has 5 goals and 1 assist, for an average of .65 points per 90, .007 points/minute.
Those are MLS stats, I suspect, and don't include Open Cup play (arguably more important, given where we stand right now). The figures on http://metrofanatic.com include all Metrostars games this season (maybe not friendlies, e.g. vs. China, Rhinos, etc.) and show Guevara on top since his two goals vs. DC in the semifinal: Code: Player G A P Guevara 7 12 26 Mathis 10 1 21 Magee 7 3 17 Wolyniec 7 3 17
Factor out PK goals and factor in PKs earned if possible. If you look at Etchevarry only one of his goals came from the field of play. Who is worth more. The guy that caused a foul to get the PK or the guy taking it?
I didn't believe Mathis is the same quality player as Ronaldo no matter what their strike rates per minute were for their national teams in the run up to the World Cup. I don't believe Mathis is the same quality player as Woly or Magee no matter how few millionths of a goal more he scores per minute than them in MLS games.
