I wouldn't read to much into that play to be quite honest. Missing a kick in one's box does not necessarily infer that the player in question was on the cusp of scoring an own-goal. He didn't hit the ball at all. You can't score an own goal unless you kick/touch the ball. He absolutely did the right thing in trying to get it out of there. Timing was just a tad bit off though.
Maybe. But it sure looked to me that he was lucky to miss it altogether and that if he'd hit it anything but perfectly, it was likely to end up in the back of the net. But whatever. I think both guys are good players and did pretty well today. We advanced. That's what I care about.
