Pretty poor finishing from Brazil today, even to include the PK. I will say, Jamaica certainly played like they belonged. Would that all WC debutantes acquit themselves so well.
Brazil was without the all-time leading scorer in WWC history and could've won 6-0, 7-0 but Jamaica acquitted themselves well?
90+2' (of +4') 3-0 Asher fk at 6m wide right, left instep through 6m deflected across into far touch. 90+3' (of +4') 3-0 Jamaica left throw-in at 6m, high cross drops at 3m 1/3 left past Bárbara, but cleared. 90+4' (of +4') 3-0 Brasil counter past circle top right, Geyse passes to Debinha 1-v-1 in arc left lane. Debinha gets to 15m mid-left, shoots way wide right. FT 3-0. Cristiane is deadly, and the rest of Brasil aren't
I guess it's worth quoting a post from another thread, so I don't look like the only lunatic out there:
Jamaica, is first Caribbean country to ever play in the woman’s World Cup They didn’t win, but they put on a great show against Brazil
Yeah. They came out to play, attacked Brazil, showed poise and promise. I think they get more than happy-to-be-there points for the game.
They were basically terrible. Just in the last 15 minutes Brazil missed 2-3 open shots that they should've finished. This game could've been much worse.
Jamaica also missed a few shots that they rushed. Hoping Jamaica gets a goal (or two) in their next game vs. Italy.
Lol, I can figure him, in a room with about 47 screens, writing with 6 or 7 limbs while reflecting with one of his two heads and of his seven identities!
Hey, I actually was typing FIVB mvb pbp on VolleyTalk this morning during Australia-Italy. The gaps in my pbp there are the goals here. (Imagine that, years from now, I'm accused of some nefarious plot, and a junior cop has to laboriously splice together my posting history across multiple sites ) No, I'm not anybody else, I just post their tweets.
Jamaica played better than I expected and both Schneider and Bunny are stars-in-the-making. The games played out differently, but look at the difference in how Nigeria and Jamaica played their 3-0 losses. Nigeria looked broken; Jamaica played to the whistle and looked ready for a rematch.
Some more background on Sydney Schneider. She was recruited by Paul Cairney, the head coach at UNC Wilmington, and she played every minute of every game of her freshman season. She saved a penalty kick vs Virginia in her very first game, and a penalty kick vs Butler in her second game. Cairney was let go by UNCW after the season because of a decades-old allegation that an investigation found baseless, but evidently the school didn't like the publicity. The new head coach apparently didn't like Schneider's time away from the college team during qualification, so he ended up starting a different goalkeeper and playing her only in the second half of games. Got the feeling she'll be starting from now on.
There's something about Brazil that just seems to turn on during the group stage of a WC. They have now gone 900 GS minutes without conceding a goal. That may be a record for both men and women.
She doesn't look Jamaican? How does a Jamaican look? Traditional Jamaican name? You obviously do not know that there are a lot of proud Jamaicans of Chinese and Indian descent as well, among other ethnicities. Go tell them they don't look Jamaican. They would quickly let you know that there is a lot "wrong with it".
I'll stand by my original assertion that Jamaica displayed well as a debutante. Esp in light of the Thai debacle.
And Thailand isn't even debuting today... They won a match in the 2015 WWC. But yeah, I've noticed that most of the pot 4 teams seem to be punching above their weight this year, Jamaica included.
The most amazing thing I experienced was many years ago, our key striker for my weekend soccer team was a White guy from Jamaica with the stereotypical accent. Threw me for a loop the first couple of times I hung around with him, then it became the norm.
