Some mod could delete the thread I created about the game. I realized this one was created while I was making mine.
10' 0-0 Mostly in South Africa's 1/2, Spain's possession vs. South Africa's dogged defending and occasional counters. FIFA tracks passing stats! https://www.fifa.com/womensworldcup/matches/match/300438234/#match-statistics Spain 4(1)-(0)0 shots(sog), 74% possession, 28/34 to 13/23 passes completed
Missed the first 11-12 minutes: thanks @Gilmoy and @KAPIJXM for opening the thread(s) and for the recap. I've seen the dangerous FK from Mapi Léon: was it basically the most dangerous chance for Spain so far?
LIkewise...so far, Spain look much more lively than not only South Africa, but also Germany and China.
If Spain improves their crossing, they have SA beat. Could have been 2 goals in the last couple of minutes.
Possession remains 73% at 20'. This is huge, but Spain has to convert this dominance, or possession becomes useless.
23' 0-0 Spain 6(2)-(0)1 shots(sog), 1-1 corners, 4-2 fouls, 73% possession, 67/81 to 19/37 passing. Still, this may be within South Africa's game plan.
That was a very nice goal...and against the run of play. And I was just thinking that SA's wingers are quite speedy, and if they get that last, dangerous touch, that can cause Spain problems.
Well, that goal was a quite unexpected turning point, at least for me. Now I wonder if Spain can somehow come back or if they're going to remain shellshocked.
25' 0-1 South Africa switch left, Kgatlana is 20m+ alone across midfield up wide left to 25m box left, in a 3-v-3. Square pass right, Motlhalo clangs ball forward into a defender, Spain drop 7 back and congest box. Motlhalo regains, taps back to Kgatlana at 19m mid-left. Kgatlana touches to 18m 6-left, chips right instep across mouth, perfectly mini-lobs Paños, off her fingertips into back right edge 3/4 high. Acres of space on that left side, and everybody watched Henry's shot yesterday What a moment!South Africa scores their first goal in FIFA Women's World Cup history. 🇿🇦👏pic.twitter.com/zRdoHWpVsP— FOX Sports (@FOXSports) June 8, 2019
Spain looks quite out of ideas right now. They look more and more anxious to get back into the game, but anxiety doesn't help making the right decisions...
Yes Spain's possession doesn't amount to anything if they don't create chances and don't convert them. On the other hand, each South African counter-attack looks potentially dangerous.
