It did look like Ivory Coast held off on their attack until Ecuador was at full strength.

Exactly. He knew the player was already on a card and did not want anyone to think he was about to give a card only to bail out once he realized the player was already on a card, as we’ve seen too many times. The confidence and awareness it shows is top tier.

 

Ok, for me this was the top performance of the WC so far. He nailed it.
However, did anyone else ( maybe @MassachusettsRef ) notice that he signaled a GK, players protested, he seemed to change to a corner, then AR held for the review. That is the first example I've seen of the R getting a GK wrong, then believing players, changing it so that VAR could confirm it.
