Sth to smile at before the match tonight Who needs semi-automated offside technology anyway! :DNot the CONCACAF crew who excellently officiated the Argentina vs. Netherlands quarterfinal at France '98. And an old graphic of ZDF should be of interest to us... ;) pic.twitter.com/jfnxU1ha3v— Mikael W. (@MikaelReferee) December 9, 2022
On a purely random off-topic note, has there ever been a better "soccer kit" day than what's coming up today with Argentina vs Netherlands and Brazil vs Croatia happening on the same day?
FIFA has determined Argentina needs to wear white shorts and socks. So a little stray from the classic. 🇦🇷🔄⬛️❌⬜️✔️ pic.twitter.com/eyzcjKGcXe— Wiki Kits BR (@Wiki_Kits_BR) December 7, 2022
At least they are allowing Argentina to keep the shirts, but sometimes I really don't get FIFA's rationale for mandating certain color choices. Last I checked, black and yellowish orange aren't exactly similar. Last night Iowa and Iowa State played a college basketball game. Iowa wore black, and Iowa State wore their "cardinal red" uniforms. No issues there, and the Dutch kit is a lot lighter than Iowa State's deeper red. But it's FIFA. Logic and reason aren't exactly noted as strengths on its resume . . .
He was so good in that game. We can laugh at that offside, but it was a borderline 50/50 call for a lot of linesmen not too far before that tournament. Last KO match with two red cards? Other than Portugal-Netherlands, of course. It’s interesting to think about those cards. For all the talk about referee’s changing behavior and holding their cards, we can also probably say that player’s aren’t as willing to do blatantly silly things. Easy 2CT and easy VC (“easy,” rather). You just don’t see that too much today. Even the ones we think are obvious now are simply not as obvious as the ones given on this day.
Someone suggested it was the black referee kit. I haven’t checked back fully. I know Argentina wore black socks so that’s not the issue. But perhaps they haven’t had a black referee jersey thus far? Note it is a change from the initial announcement. So someone decided a switch was necessary.
Uruguay has seen a black referee kit with their black socks and shorts a few times this tournament. So who really knows.
It's a game of whack-of-mole, but perhaps the opponent's socks/shorts would have clashed with Uruguay's change socks? These type of things are a big puzzle because one change can necessitate another. So then you start prioritizing the best changes.
Did FIFA finally get rid of the "can you tell the contrast on a black and white TV?" standard that they hung on to forever?
I believe so, yes. I haven't seen it in the regulations that I've read for some time. I wouldn't hazard a guess on when it was removed, though.
Agree about the offside. Especially remembering that this linesman was essentially ‘the Ragoonath’ of this WC (Owen Powell from Jamaica) - he did well here, and overall for the tournament in fact. Far, far from nowadays ofc!
In this day and age, I'm still surprised that FIFA hasn't allowed colored socks at least when a team is wearing black or navy socks. I get that black is still traditional and probably the first choice, but it would still eliminate some things if colored socks were still an option. I know that when I do ECSR college, I generally still wear black socks regardless of shirt color unless a team is wearing black or navy socks.
13’ slide from behind thru attacker and player gets the ball, calls foul and talks to player Commentator “if it’s all ball how is this a foul”
13' - That is justifiable for a careless foul, but he could have also gotten away with no foul if he wanted to (the slide only "carries away" the foot after playing the ball rather than going through the leg to get there). It's a choice either way.
