I think only a handful of teams in the world can break the Paraguayan defense when they go into bunker: Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Netherlands and, yes, Spain.

 

I really hope anybody watched this match doesn't shape a bad impression, and mainly try to find something good... (e.g. didn't Honda still do well? How about those solid backlines, Nakazawa, Tanaka, Nagatomo and Kawashima?)

Paraguay turns any game in which they play into a pain to watch --unless you're Paraguayan. But it's their style, and kudos to them for staying true to their spirit.

They managed to tie a very offensive Netherlands in a friendly and, somehow, managed to turn that game into an utter bore. I wouldn't be surprised to see them go for another penalty shoot-out next.

I think Spain has what it takes to crack their defense, if they play like they played in the Euro. Against Portugal, yes, I can see another 0-0 after 120 and then penalties.

Personally, I love how they play. I love defensive tactics, I'm somewhat nerdy about my football. Paraguay in 1998 taught the world how to defend using triangles when tackling, so the ball wouldn't escape back to the other team.

Just like Italia gave us catenaccio, one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. Yes, I know an Argentinian invented it, but Italy made it a success story.

Japan was much more defensive today then Paraguay was, Paraguay deserved to win as they where the better team.

True, and Roque has never performed to potential with the NT.

Far too many times they chose caution over going to the attack. Which is fine with me, just boring to watch (and I think 90% of viewers would agree).

Paraguay is the better team and they would have deserved to win in regular time, had they played as I know they can. That's what drives me against the wall at times. Instead of showing what they can do, they pass it back to the keeper just not to risk the counter.

But I understand. It's wise. And more so considering how good they are with the penalty kicks.

Well, look where they are and look where brave Chile is.

 

Japan didn't even do anything besides use their speed to counter and rely on free kicks which didn't work on Paraguay's defense.

Paraguay may have not played great but they where still better then Japan, not once was Villar ever truly threatned.

Very debatable.
There was nothing to separate the two teams.
Almost flawless defending both ways, leaving only half-chances, and a lack of quality on the final ball in the 18 killed many promising situations for both sides.
I predicted 0-0, most games these two countries have ever played recently ended 0-0, and eight times out of ten this matchup will go 0-0.
It's a deadlock. Japan threw it away by making a very poor choice for one of our PK kickers, a guy who is a fullback and never scores goals.
There was the difference.

Paraguay had the more dangerous chances and had more shots on goal and the better possession. Anyone who says Japan deserved to win obviously didn't watch the game.

 

Me too , would be annoying if Ghana , Holland , Germany and Spain/Portugal defeated all of them , i really want 5-6 auto Qualifying spots for South-america even if the entire continent consists of only 10 teams ( ofcourse 9 since Brazil is the host )
