Despite the fact that what they did at the end, refusal of play, was the contrary of "flair-play". But that's the game...
Tough break for Senegal. Them and Morocco showed some good stuff. FIFA fair play points seems like a real BS tie-breaker given how subjective a YC can be. I'd rather them flip a coin.
Barca signing Mina was always a good thing. He would be very useful for us against bus parking opponents. Anyways well played Colombia and Senegal
And Poland gets some points to go home without much shame. Had Japan really wanted, they could have beaten the Poles and topped the group.
Colombia deserved to top the group IMO. Senegal should have advanced as well. Seems like a very poor tiebreaker.
Senegal out via fair play but Japan go through with an act of unsportsmanlike conduct by refusing to go forward against a team they are losing against. Pretty bizarre circumstances.
That's debatable since they were always taking the risk of a Senegal goal in the other game, I really don't believe that they were expecting a place in play-off thanks to yellow cards accumulation.
I liked Senegal way of playing, wish they could have gone through too. Only an equalizer and one less yellow card away...
Japan was gifted points by Colombia in the first game after a boneheaded play by Sanchez. Senegal played better throughout the tournament IMO.
But they were outplayed in their direct matchup with JPN. Look at the stats and listen to Cisse after the game.
I don't really agree. Senegal didn't know how to play with the lead. I do agree that they didn't deserve to win that game, but overall, I think they were the better team over the course of the three games.
I doubt the Japanese press will be fine with their players passing the ball around to waste time those last minutes.
Yeah, I actually find UEFA pretty annoying and most of those teams pretty dull. Japan at least has flair and organization.
Colombia plays better football and I’m happy they went through. I’ve always had a soft spot for Colombia as a nation itself in general. I also felt that samba touch in Colombia.
Senegal only looked convincing in the first game, but their goals were due to rival errors. Japan bossed Colombia in the second half of their game, but one man up. Overall, both teams were pretty bad/inconsistent, so I cannot agree with your assessment of one of them being more deserving than the other.
So, you're defending the idea that bonecrunching tackles that could injure an opponent or professional fouls shouldn't mean anything, but knowing how to intelligently play out a game when you're ahead in the tournament, that's somehow wrong. Pressing in that circumstance and risking a goal that sends you home would have been profoundly dumb. Sitting back and absorbing pressure would be dumb. Getting the ball and holding it is actually a decent approach. So, you're basically in favor of dumb, thuggish football. Lovely.
