This probably wasn't the moment but I do think eventually one of those will cause enough of an outrage to make ifab consider allowing var to intervene on something like that. Obviously would be a fundamental change to the laws.
Definitely matters from a scoring perspective for the AR. How much it will matter in the “do they get the final” question is something I couldn’t begin to guess at. Particularly because it’s so early and we don’t yet know the result (though now it can be argued any result favorable to Denmark stems from that).
Here’s the clip. I can see how the AR guessed based on the reactions of both players. https://streamable.com/dltpkm
I guess in theory any corner or dfk could be considered a start of the app and apply the same app rules and allow a clear error that led to the restart to be reviewed. Obviously this would be a fundamental shift and could open Pandora's box that we talked about with var when it started. Not that I'm asking for it either. Just think eventually it will happen in a big enough moment to get considered.
So this begs the question. Why don't they regulate that all corner kick goals be checked by VAR? ***I know checking each and every corner will slow the game to a crawl at times, which is why a happy medium could be just when a goal is scored***
Because then why not free kicks? The slippery slope is immediate. The line has to be drawn somewhere or then everything is open to review. But like @code1390 I’ve always thought some expansion is inevitable and it will stem from a massive controversy. Don’t think this is it.
Also think back to WC10. Netherlands were pissed about a missed corner at the OTHER end leading to the tournament winning goal (it was wrongly called a goal kick). So it would never stop.
so you want to go back ONLY if a goal is scored?!?!?! How many touches after the CK do we go if a goal is scored 3 touches after the CK??? Hint, you cannot go back after a restart happens. I hope we never even think about trying to change that. In regards to OOB
Of course a problem with being able to change corner kicks and free kicks leading to goals is that you would introduce a VAR decision that would solely remove goals.
That, too. The standard now is sensible because some line has to be drawn and if it’s not on restarts it’s pretty much impossible to draw. But a clear mistake on the “wrong” match in a vital moment… I worry what the reaction would be.
Obviously a first 10 minute goal in this particular quarterfinal will not be the driving force for something like this. Now a stoppage time winner in the Italy Spain semifinal on the other hand...
What if a goal was scored from an attacking free kick that was clearly wrong? And that attacking free kick had yellow card associated with it? And maybe that yellow card was a player’s second one of the match? Try sorting that out.
An OOB check is not at all similar to checking a foul called. It really is a black and white call, with no grey areas.
So are you checking every single one? And if the problem is attacking restarts you can’t do corners without also doing attacking free kicks.
It took the English tabloid machine (Lampard 2010, referee team sent home) to finally introduce goal-line technology. The necessary technology was in existence for at least two decades.
Anybody that wants restarts open to review, should go look at the NBA in the final two minutes where they review every out of bounds call. It's unwatchable. It even becomes more farcical because replay has exposed what officials in basketball have done for decades. Instead of calling a ticky tack foul to send a player to the free throw line when their hand gets slapped they just give him the ball out of bounds instead. But replay can't award the foul only give the ball to the other team. It becomes laughable. But it is inevitable that corner kicks will be subject tor review.
Honestly when you go back to the early days of the first VAR thread on the referee forum and looked at where we thought things would go, I'm surprised it's been as steady state as it has been so far.
