Somewhat shocking to not see it given. Only the "it's early and I don't want to start a run and it was over-exuberant..." mantra saves him. We shall see if that's wise from Taylor or not.
It's Anthony Taylor. Giving yellow cards for SPA/reckless 4 minutes into a game is something he doesn't do.
And now he will be subbed off. Even if it was "wise" for match management purposes, given how consequential the foul ends up being, it's pretty impossible to justify it now.
And not to mention Kroos’s second foul, which could’ve been considered reckless in its own right, too.
You could tell the answer was "It's too soon." Always a bad look for a challenge that forces a player off with no misconduct.
Players know that with English referees they can leave a little bit on an opponent early in a big game. They are more likely to give the benefit of the doubt. Something similar happened to Ronaldo in the Euro 2016 Final.
Kroos didn't have one at 6'? He picked up the ball to dribble after his teammate fouled. Unless it was another one I missed? There was also a push to the back that Taylor let go. This could teeter. I mean it's two of your more disciplined/respected teams and you just sort of expect them to play, I guess. Certaintly given the stakes. But that's a dangerous premise to rely on, I think.
Truly astounds me how in every event these refs won’t give easy reckless yellows that no one would complain about. People complain more about non-given cards than given cards and the refs still do this. I do not understand the logic behind it That’s already happening in every single copa game where there are 2-3 actionable tackles in the first 10 minutes with none given
The logic is very, very, very simple: I don't want to be Kovacs. Now, one can parse what actually happened in that match and realize Kovacs maybe did things on his own, outside of early cards, which were simply not good enough at this level. But the simplest analysis is that he all stems from early yellow cards. And he's home. If Anthony Taylor wants to referee the final, red carding Toni Kroos inside 20 minutes--no matter how obvious the cards might seem in a vacuum--is, at least in the back of his mind, a surefire way to ensure that can't happen.
Kovacs issue was the dissent directive. I believe that of his 20 cards, something like 8 of them were dissent-related. But yeah I know that’s the case, that you’re damned if you do and dammed if you don’t. It just really stinks. And I believe Taylor does this in premier league too doesnt he? And now Taylor is giving yellow cards for almost every tackle. This rules
He's all over the place with his card selection. He's artificially trying to keep the card count low instead of giving the ones that are deserved and letting the players adjust.
He tried not giving them. Then he handed them out for everything. Now that foul by Can he’s back to ignoring.
Well, that was his second issue, yes. His first issue was a historically early 2CT that then set an expectation (and desire) to see more cards. It's as if a lesson could be learned. But almost never is. Meler knows it. It all makes me very interested in how Turpin approaches his match this weekend.
That's probably a bad flag denying a corner kick at 36', right? I know we've talked about it this tournament, but with the in-ball technology related to touches and SAOT... give it a few years or a tournament or two for both to evolve and these decisions are just going to be taken away from ARs.
Was just about to say the same thing but I think PO mostly goes out the window in a match like this. Is Kroos on suspension watch, by any chance?
And almost every on-field card kovacs gave was correct. If not for the UEFA dissent directive, it would have been a regular heavy ~10 card game (not counting the post game red card and corresponding yellow card to the instigator) and I bet kovacs wouldn’t have been viewed as poorly. Big surprise coming from me but I really really hope Turpin gives the cards early and often. If he doesn’t, that game is going to become a disaster very quickly. And Kroosnis not on suspension watch. Riding er was and he got his suspension
