Hhmmm....if Spain and Japan decide to not play too hard and settle for the 0-0 draw, they can knock Germany out and probably CR too since its unlikely they will beat Germany.

A draw wont help CR either since their GD is 1-7

If Spain and Japan draw 0-0 and Germany wins 2-0, Germany pips Japan for the second spot on goal difference.

The surest way to screw over Germany is for Spain to lose to Japan. Germany would need to beat CR, they would still have to overcome a current +7 to -1 gap in goal differential vis-a-vis Spain to pip them for 2nd place.

It begs the question of whether Spain prefers Morocco or Croatia in the R16.

If Spain were to lose to Japan, their goal differential wouldn't stay +7!!
Nonetheless, its a tall order for Germany if Spain manages to lose.

I'd take my chance with Morocco.
They'd still end up against Portugal/Brazil in next round though

Spain not starting Alba, Carvajal, Laporte and Torres. So partial B-team??
Thats interesting since they havent qualified for R16 yet

If Costa Rica beat Germany, Spain is screwed as well if they lose to japan.

It makes the group look like this:

    1. Japan 6pts
    2. Costa Rica 6pts
    3. Spain 4pts
    4. Germany 1pt

True, I don't want to count out los Ticos. That would be utter chaos though, and I'm here for it.

But if Spain are tied 1-1 in the 60th minute and Germany are winning 2-0, I can see both teams not trying too hard for the rest of the game

Nah, check out the bottom middle square in the grid above. A Spain-Japan draw coupled with a 2-0 or higher Germany win knocks Japan out of 2nd place. Japan has to play for the win to be sure of advancing.

If Japan equalizes we're back on yellow card watch... Japan losing 6:3 with Germany.

EDIT: My mistake. Japan beat Germany, so Japan go through at 1:1.

And now it gets very interesting, it especially will around the 80th minute if scores stay the same.

Spain are safe. Their GD is +6.
They wont care if they lose.

EDIT: And now its 2-1 Japan
