And Serbia almost gets the tying goal but it's called back on a close but correct offside call.

Assuming Germany/Ghana stays the same, I think so. They'll be tied on GD, but will have three goals to two for Ghana.

87' 2-1 Long ball falls to #9 Joshua Kennedy in a 1-v-1 at 16m just inside box top center -- his defender coughs it up! He has a half-chance under heavy pressure -- shoots just wide left.

90' 2-1 Serbia right corner. Everybody comes up!

I think the ref just missed a hand ball...

replay: definately, even if his back was turned that was a long way to have an arm outstretched.

90' 2-1 Serbia right corner, curls in to 12m center. #4 Tim Cahill goes up in defense, misses -- #5 Nemanja Vidić gets an awkward side-of-skull leaning-away touch, and the ball heads goalward and hits Cahill's flapping left hand. Jorge Larrionda waves off the handball appeals, awards a left corner. Cleared, but Serbia bring it right back up ...

That one was definately ball to hand - would have been very harsh. Bit hypocritical for Vidic to appeal after his handball in the previous match.

FIFA needed an African country to go through so Serbia weren't gonna get anything.

    Only most 50-50 calls.

In the end probably the best ref the entire group has had.

90+2' 2-1 Australia send an outlet to #9 Joshua Kennedy just at midfield -- he's 1-v-1, with numbers! Rolls a ball to midleft, for #14 Brett Holman at 35m behind the trap. He holds too long -- threads a through-ball to box top center, it's a footrace between #1 Vladimir Stojković and an Australian. Stojković wins, and blasts it clear.

90+3' 2-1 Serbia raid up the box right, cross to #9 Marko Pantelić -- offside.

90+4' 2-1 Australia roam up the center, pass inside-out to 15m 6-left -- strolls in and shot is blocked. Australia control at Serbia's box top, can't create an entry pass. Full time!

Deserved win for Australia, just too bad it won't see them through, but there are worse ways to leave the tournament. (Don't expect Serbian fans to be gracious in defeat though).

I would agree except that it was technically ball heading towards goal, and so if the hand is outstretched I still think it should be called. I understand why it wasn't called, but still just the extent Cahill arms were extended greatly increases the chances of ball hitting hand.

Defeat in victory, victory in defeat etc. Very good showing from the lads after a horror start. Getting out of this group was always going to be hard and we can hold our heads high that it was as close as it was.

The ball didn't have enough power to get to goal, not to mention the pack of players it would have to get through, and Schwarzer. Again Vidic's was far more a penalty. Anyway it was line ball at most IMO the ref had a very good game, small descisions to both teams could have gone either way.

Also the end results also prove this was the group of death, both Australia and Serbia could feel unlucky not to be playing in the second round.

Proud of the boys good to see tonight we showed we are a capable team who should be in the world cup.Our first ever win against a European team at the world cup was a great effort.

Removed Croatia from the world cup 2006, Serbia 2010, Bosnia and Herzegovina 2014?

Great effort and for a while i thought we were going to rack up 3 or 4 goals. No doubt Aust were the 2nd best team in this group, just controversial calls in the first two games hurt us (is that politically correct enough for your Caesar???).
With a bit more of a "rub of the green" we would have been playing USA in Round of 16.

So who thinks we are the "certain 3 points team" in this group now?

Not to mention the handball in Germany Ghana's game - almost identical to Kewell's, If Lahm had've been sent off, Ghana were a good chance to win and we would be 2nd.

In the end though them the breaks (they just always seem to fall for the more recognised teams;)) Well proud of the boys.

Also would the last remaining Holman-basher please punch themselves in the nads extra hard?

Not a Holman basher, but a Holman doubter I was. Very glad to have been proven wrong about him, he has been one of our most impressive players this WC

Gallant effort by the Socceroos to beat Serbia. I thought we might have been in with a chance to progress there being 2-0 up at one stage. Awesome long range goal by Holman. The Ghana - Germany result didn't go our way, but really it was all down to playing too defensive and getting flogged 4 nil in the first match against Germany. For a number of Socceroos this will be their last ever World Cup, especially disappointed for Kewell as it may be his last too.

Out on a high but once again, what might have been! :/
