    But the free kick was already taken by Paraguay. So I'm more asking about that part. Its not like previous mistaken identity. This is basically changing the decision after a restart occurred.

    What the hell is Paraguay even doing. They just sit there watching USA ping pong the ball back and forth around the penalty area

    I absolutely love the interaction between Poch and the referee crew after the game. It's ok to have mutual respect between officials and coaches. It's doesn't always have to be combative.

    As far as Makkelie goes… good? I didn’t love everything but he kept a lid on things. Card decisions were relatively consistent with a miss or two. No missed KMIs. And Collina will probably love what he did annulling the Ream card (though, of course, it’s theoretically an initial miss).

    Stay the course. Another similar group stage game and he’s a utility player for a tough KO match or two? I don’t see him as a final three match candidate unless his next match really sets the world on fire.

    97:05 to 97:10 why was Makkelie holding his arm up while the ball was in play? It looked like a hockey referee indicating a delayed penalty. The ball hadn't been out of play for probably a minute or more and there was no advantage or such to indicate.

    Makkelie understood the assignment tonight. This was the quintesential referee allowing the spectable to happen and not getting in the way. Was he perfect, no, but he allowed the game to be what it was going to be. Good job ref.

    I thought he did well - there's some recent history with these teams and it got fairly spicy the last time they met. Not fantastic but good and no one will be talking about him other than changing the card for simulation.

    Interesting for me, everyone I know watching this game who isn't a referee is messaging saying "now THAT is the perfect use of VAR" while all the referees are saying "he can't do THAT"
