Also via an OFR, when mistaken identity is factual. So many things just got invented.

I cannot imagine Makkelie just made that up...

    Right???

Also this. Like yes it’s a dive and simulation. But to say there is NO contact and enough to overturn it…?

Well maybe his VAR made it up. Or didn’t. There seems to be confusion as to whether or not an OFR was necessary. He was about to make the change without the OFR.

The part that really has to be wrong is giving an IFK to USA for the simulation.

This is an absolutely incredible loophole in the 52’. Call it “mistaken identity” because you mistakenly gave the simulator the card. LOL

Love this new effect of VAR if it takes away a wrong caution for simulation and gives it to the right player.

I don't want them assigning cautions to diving players but if a defender gets a caution wrongly then I'm fine with correcting it.

So play had already restarted right? What if Paraguay scored?

They just had Clattenburg on, and he said this is one of the new wrinkles they can use at this tournament. So he didn't seem surprised at all.

    It's certainly news to me.

We're just making shit up now? If so, let's fix goal kicks that should be corner kicks.

    Clattenburg useless as usual.

Can't wait to hear what word salad Dale will say to defend this.

Faghani's tournament ended in 2022 for ignoring instruction on handling via an incorrectly recommended OFR.

Makkelie and co should be done for just making shit up here even if they "got it right."

Watching in a bar and I told everyone I'd come here and figure out if we were all mistaken. Nope. Thanks.

If this really is a correct review, which there is no way that is, then every caution is reviewable theoretically now.

Almiron getting sent with a 2CT would be the most fun outcome now if you root for chaos.

upload_2026-6-12_19-23-27.png Okay so here is the 2026/27 LOTG section about VAR. they have specifically removed mistaken identity only applying to the offending team. So now, technically, yes, you CAN give yellow cards for mistaken identity for simulation

It might be “correct” per tournament instruction.

But it’s still invented and your point stands.

Or is it only because the defender got incorrectly cautioned? Which is still a huge change but at least minimizes it.

Also I love how unlike every other ref, Makkelie waited until after doing everything to announce the decision to the stadium instead of before. Lol

I would be fine if simulation was added to things reviewable by VAR. Reducing diving is a good goal.

But, if they're making that change, they should probably announce it first...

I wonder if he went to the monitor to sell the decision better. We won’t know unless we get the audio obviously, but it reminds me of that offside decision Geiger overturned and awarded the goal in 2018. It was a factual decision under the rules at the time, if I remember correctly, but I remember hearing audio of him and his VAR talking about him going to the monitor in order to sell the call better.

    That’s my memory anyway.

Two separate questions. Q 1 is whether the VAR should have recommended review. I really struggle with that.

But, on cue at the monitor, doesn’t protocol allow the R to make appropriate decisions, so what M did was OK, regardless of whether the VAR send down was correct?

I mean, c’mon. If that’s what that meant, I want to see the notes from IFAB that supports it. I guess it could. But talk about a quiet and wild change. There was no coverage of this.

Yes there should have been a card, no it shouldn’t have been that player.
I’m all for punishing diving but that was weird.
