Remarkable finish. After an odd early off-side call, the Yanks pull out another result.

It's hard to score goals at this level and to force a team to score two goals for one is ridiculous. Quit being an apologist for FIFA and demand better. It's silly.

With that said, the USA did what they had to do. They got over it, and came back and pressured Algeria until they put it through. Apparently the US has scored more goals in qualifying after the 80th minute than any other team. They are very resilient.

Univision is interviewing spanish-speaking US fans outside Nevada Smiths. I'm having a hard time keeping it together to type this.

"USA USA" sounds the same in both English and Spanish, it turns out.

USA should really be sitting on 7 points right about now, so it's only fair they're atop the group. Hope for a Germany win and Australian miracle now.

That late goal ruined my 0:0 prediction, but the one good thing about the US winning is that we won't have to hear so much nagging about the referees. I didn't see this game, but it was interesting that the comments I have read elsewhere from neutral posters about the disallowed goal indicated that the US attacker was either even or his foot was slightly behind the Slovenian defenders when the pass was made. In other words, it was one of those close cases which should ordinarily be called in favor of the attacking team, but calling it offside would not seem to warrant the non-stop nagging I read here during the live match reports.

Anyway, congratulations. On balance, the US deserved moving out of this group, even if the difference between the US and Algeria and Slovenia were not that great and US chances of advancing from this group were always 50/50 in my eyes.

The USA also avoids Argentina. Now, Uruguay, South Korea and (Serbia, Australia or Germany) stands on the path to the semifinal.

God, I hope people were watching this, don't see how anyone could think football was boring after witnessing that.

Glad USA are through, but not happy it was at the expense of us finishing second. Seems like you wasted as many chances as we did.

Congratultions, obviously I'd rather England had won the group but no one can deny you deserved it, you should have beaten Slovenia and had another goal wrongly ruled out today, you've been the best side overall in these games, proving me and many other people wrong. Congratulations again on going through.

    Indeed, quite small.

US will most likely play against Serbia. If serbians keep their hands away from the ball it is possible that they will move forward. Still a bit shaky in defense though.

The late goal by Landon was amazing but USA needed to score much earlier and more often... we can't count on that sort of last minute heroics to carry us in future games. But for now... USA can exhale and say THANKS DONOVAN in unison...

That is certainly an lol comment. And USA sounds the sam in English and Spanish. This is a country for everybody. African expats, hispanics, Euro expats. This is why it's not a matter of if the US will ever win a World Cup, but rather when. It will happen eventually. I wish I could say that about an African side.

Bluntly, this is why there was so much nagging. The USA effectively needed to score six goals to advance out of this group. The USA was, bluntly, about two minutes from being eliminated from the World Cup on two egregiously disallowed goals.

Instead, they get (and I know this is going to sound arrogant as all get-out, especially to foreign fans) their rightful place (not from before the World Cup (England was the seeded team!), but the rightful place they EARNED during it) as the winners of the group.

On top of this, this probably makes them favorites, bluntly, for the semifinals. The two disallowed goals and the like could galvanize this team and make them as dangerous as they were a year ago in South Africa.
