Let's hope something does happen soon. For the benefit of everyone involved, including referees. If players know they will be penalized, heavily I'd hope, for deploying various means of cheating, then it will stop. Too bad that it seems FIFA enjoys theater and drama more than ensuring fair and honest competition.

When the match isn't broken up (in this last 10 minutes), it's more enjoyable, tense, but enjoyable.

I don't see ref losing control really. Sure tention is there but this is a game that more or less decides who advance. But I think that ref is doing good although very harsh

It's very hard to ensure a clear good outcome. It's left to the referee's instinct. This ref has been fairly consistent in his idiocy. Since he had pulled a yellow for a soft pull or a little obstructing, it'd have been unfair at that point not to pull the red for the elbow.

Two types of being inconsistent are favoring a team, or making "make up calls." So far, we've seen two refs doing the latter: Coulibaly calling off the USA goal because he had not pulled the red on Dempsey's elbow, and Lannoy let the Ivorians tackle very hard because he knew he had allowed Fabiano get away with murder.

Those guys who are inconsistent are the worst. FIFA does punish them. But not the sticklers.

Swiss have a lot riding on this game. With a tie in this game and a win against Hondurus, very likely, they will top the group. That would be a ticket to the quarter finals for them.

Paraguay and Swiss will go far. Swiss need a point in this game.

Being up a man for an hour is an advantage Spain didn't have.

Well, so far the attacking team does not lose its head, any match vs. Switzerland is likely to end 0-0.

A good ref will pull players over when they start the acting, grabbing in the area, pushing, and tell them that he is not buying it. Being too free on the carding signals players that playing for the call is a possibility.

Play acting can only affect referees on situations where the right call is hard to determine from their POV... which unfortunatly happens a lot.

Tight on the offsides trap. Great pass for the finish though.

same as messi and robinho - after a few opportunities the players close them and than 2nd attacker has enough space to score

It is inevitable that at times the ref will be caught up far from the action or at a poor angle, and so his call will be influenced by the play acting. The way to minimize it is for the ref to penalize the play acting when he does recognize it, to discourage the players from doing it. If the players realize that they can get away with it, they will keep doing until it pays off.

Chile needed to now be very careful not to get more cards, for this game and next.

This Swiss team can attack. For some reason, they have chosen to play absoutely defensive in the World Cup. As if they were scared to get scored on, more than thrilled about scoring themselves.

But in the UEFA quals, they showed more. I think they're a bit like the Paraguay of UEFA (at least as Paraguay used to be): timid to attack on the big stage.
