A ref is not obligated to give a corner in that situation.
If he feels like the time is up then the time is up.

this game was amazing, kudos to both teams, Ghana for winning and Korea for the grit and the way they never stopped trying

Indeed, I can understand Paulo Bento's frustration seeing how South Korea was assaulting Ghana's defence in the last minutes but that was still pointless to lose his nerve on this.

This reminds me in 2014 when the referee whistled the end of the game while Benzema was scoring a goal to Switzerland. It wasn't counted, lol. France was already leading 5-2 though.

Korean stats: 22 shots, 7 on target (2 goals), 63% possession, 13 corners

    Ghanain stats: 7 shots, 3 on target (3 goals), 37%, 5 corners

    RUTHLESS!

C'mon though... they had 13 corners already... How many more?

As a player Paulo Bento was suspended for 5 months after his outburst towards the referee at the end of the Euro 2000 semifinal v France.
That was back in the 'Golden Goal' days and the match ended with a controversial handball penalty to France three minutes before a penalty shootout would have decided the finalist.

You misunderstood me, I wasn't saying that the referee was wrong to whistle. We already had 10 minutes of extra-time which was more than enough and the referee had even given 40 seconds more! Hence why I was saying that was silly from Bento to lose his nerves the way he did.

Did you see the overall stats?
Korean stats: 22 shots, 7 on target (2 goals), 63% possession, 13 corners

    Ghanain stats: 7 shots, 3 on target (3 goals), 37%, 5 corners

    RUTHLESS!

Kim Minjae is clearly badly hurt. From the stat it looks like Korea were unlucky. Maybe Uruguay will beat Ghana?
It is never a good idea to use an injured player. Both Kim Minjae and Son HM.
What do you guys think of that little guy Lee KangIn? who was the Golden Ball winner of 2019 U20 world cup at age of 18.

But then in 2002 almost the same situation and the referee did not give the corner to Spain and blew the whistle. The Spain coach vehemently protested and many here screamed that Koreans were cheaters.

I don't really have a problem with the referee blowing the whistle on time. But here the opinion is almost unanimous in favor of the referee while in 2002 it was exactly the opposite. Maybe many of you were too young to post then but you are clearly biased on average.

"not obligated blah blah" It is entirely within a referee's jurisdiction to award a penalty if a defender so blatantly interferes with the attacker as to pull down the shirt so much that the shirt is almost ripped off and the attacker fell down to the ground. Still that is listed as one of the "cheats" Korea performed by buying the referee. This was vs Italy 2002. Even a BBC commentator came on and said while it is not against the rule it was very very wrong of the referee to give a PK in that kind of situation.

But ref did not blow on time. He added 50 seconds to 10 minutes extra time.

But Ghanaian player went down for a minute before that so he should have added that according to the new rule.

Once again I am not making an issue out of it. Just the hypocrisy of accusing Koreans of being cheaters in 2002 and siding with the referee now when it is conveniently against Korea.

I remember back in 2002 saying that it's only because it was Korea that knocked out those "big teams" that all those calls were scrutinized.

Because "big teams" have been favored by the refs for a very long time and still do today, so I never really bought all the "Korea got help from the refs" because again it has been happening before and after, but people ignore it because it's a "big team" after all.

Crazy game, many Ghanaians at the fan festival in Doha. Afterwards, they interviewed a few of them on the big stage and they were saying how they were looking forward to meeting Uruguay and how they are "coming for" Luis Suarez.... was kind of cool to see Andre Ayew and Jung Woo-young have a moment on the touchline there. They are teammates here in Qatar at Al Sadd.

Never forget this classic refereeing approach at a World Cup

Blow the whistle while the corner comes into the box!

"Beautiful" handball goal vs Cote d'Ivoire by Brasil in 2010. People were salivating how beautiful a cheat that was... Because it was a magical handball goal... Absurd.

There's plenty of examples, but they are forgotten because the "big team" wins.
