Is this tossing the coin twice a new thing? I've always just asked where we should take the kicks from. I guess because I don't ref in front of thousands of screaming fans though.

But La Liga matches, where most of these guys play, are different. Look at the tournament stats. Look at the behavior for the international teams in UEFA competitions. I wouldn't have expected 9 here. Granted, I also don't think it's a horrendous number--and it was a deserved number tonight--but I do think it's worth asking if the fact that nobody can get suspended from the final contributes to that fact.

One to let the players decide which end and the other for choice of kick.

Once for side and once for order. Although the Laws of the game only dictate you do it for order.

Yes. Once to pick the side, the second to pick who shoots first. In a situation like this, a coin flip is a good way to decide the side. The suitability of the pitch is the same, and one set of fans on each end. Might as well flip to decide who gets the fan advantage, lest it end in a call of referee bias otherwise.

Ugh I hate this dumb walking up to the ball...jog up and do it.

Was that a full stop? Nah replay shows it wasn't.

Nah, the one in the England game was a lot closer.

Well done by Cakir. Gets out without any controversy or major talking points. Though Portugal will have something to say about their entire back line getting booked :p

I just can't stop comparing it to RM v Barca. Same guys, different sport.

Portugal would complain about anything, so would Spain. Everyones a whiner and everyone has a Twitter for it.

Good game near the end though, I thought Cakir did well to keep the game flowing and minimize the damage. The players kept playing and there was little problems.

Not sexy, but hard to imagine anyone doing better.
Given the stage and the actors, I'm thinking maybe the best refereed game so far in the tournament???

What's sad is the KFTM had more flow and grace than anything the first 90 minutes had. For the most part. Also had more drama.

Yeah I agree, I was just thinking what's more enjoyable, this game or the small tournament game of u13s I did where a team came back from 4-1 to tie it 4-4 in the final 30 seconds. I like being a ref.

Have you ever taken a penalty in a shootout? NOBODY is going to run from half before taking the kick, and complaining about it is bizarre.

I absolutely jog from the center circle, put the ball down and take it. That walk forces you to think too much, it's simple psychology. Put the ball down pick your spot and rip it!

    It's like a free throw.
    Jogging gets the heart going.
They want calm, that's why they walk.

Does the referee receive a list from each team on the order of penalty takers before the shootout begins and must that list be adhered to as the kicks are taken?

There is no list. Any one of the players on the field at the end of ET can take a penalty in any order they please.

The only lists made are internal team lists, which mean jack for the ref.

I usually ask for a list pre-kick and I haven't had a team/coach reject my request. Makes it more manageable because everyone knows who's going and there no delay / arguing over who's going to take, etc. If they don't want to give a list, that's fine, but I haven't had a rejection to-date.
