The first match was the season opener, a nil-nil at Energizer Park, back when there was hope and the 2025 season seemed so young. As Rose would say, “It’s been eighty-four years . . .” After a 2-0-2 start, CITY now has a 10-match MLS winless streak, can’t score, and compensates for that by no longer being able to defend. At this posting, CITY still has Olof Mellberg as coach, and he is still insisting that the team is playing well at times, just having some bad breaks, and needing a few adjustments to get back to winning. To all the rest of us, CITY is down 12 degrees by the bow, over 8 degrees to starboard, the women and children are pulling away in lifeboats, the band is playing “Nearer, My God, to Thee,” and Mellberg is running in circles screaming, “Be British,” which seems especially odd for a Swedish coach. Discuss.

Player Availability Report. St. Louis CITY SC. Suspended: none. YC Caution: unknown. OUT: Jannes Horn, Henry Kessler, Joakim Nilsson, Tomas Totland. Questionable: Alfredo Morales. Colorado Rapids. Suspended: none. YC Caution: unknown. OUT: Cole Bassett, Ali Fadal, Rafael Navarro, Zack Steffen. Questionable: none. OUT but NOT DUE TO INJURY: Chidozie Awaziem. This is where the availability report is . . . weird. Chidozie Awaziem was on YC caution going into Colorado's match with San Diego. He was rostered for the match, but did not play. Rotowire says that "Awaziem is out for Saturday's match against St. Louis due to undisclosed reasons.Awaziem is heading to the sidelines for Saturday, with the defender out but not due to injury. This is a crucial loss for the club, as he has been a regular starter in the defense. A change will be made due to his absence, with Ian Murphy as a possible replacement." Meanwhile FC Cincinnati has a video on their website welcoming him to Cincinnati. Cincinnati had traded him to Colorado in the offseason. No idea what's up, but it looks like Colorado will be missing some key players for this match.
Zack Steffen is out of the Rapids lineup? You mean, St. Louis has a chance to score? Maybe I need to cool my jets. It's the hope that gets ya....right?
2 things that have been painfully obvious for weeks: 1) Teuchert can’t finish to save his life, that’s not just the chance tonight but multiple chances through multiple games. 2) Hartel’s set piece (corner) delivery is atrocious.
I had another commitment and didn't watch the match live. I watched the full replay on Sunday, though. Just for historical purposes, here was CITY's Starting XI and bench: Starting XI: Burki-Wallem-Hiebert-Baumgartl-Yaro-Watts--Girdwood-Reich--Durkin-Hartel-Teuchert-Klauss Bench: Lundt-Becher-Pompeu-Ostrak-Reid-Wentzel-Xande Silva-Zalinsky
Was there a post-match press conference? CITY doesn't have a video on YouTube yet, but that could be because of the Memorial Day weekend. The match was a disaster. As soon as I saw the Teuchert-Klauss mess at around 35' or so, I had a feeling it was over. When Yapi scored a few minutes later, I knew it. Unfortunately, I wasn't wrong. If CITY is going to make a change, this is the perfect timing, with a full week to prepare for San Jose, another full week to get ready for Portland, and another full week to get ready for the Galaxy. IMHO, Diego, Lutz, and Olof all need to go. I would replace Diego Gigliani with Peter Vermes (yes, really) and replace Olof Mellberg with Gary Smith as an interim. I would leave Lutz Pfannenstiel's position vacant until the end of the season, and move Smith into that position for the offseason. I would try desperately to hire Jim Curtain as head coach for next season. Vermes-Smith-Curtain know the MLS, know the opposition, know that scoring is the key to winning in this league, and know how to handle young players. The season is lost. It's time to build for the future, and the current front office shouldn't be the ones to do that. CITY is on the clock. The change needs to happen Tuesday at the latest.
Fort Collins, I agree with all your comments. Curtain should definitely be at the top of our list. In the event that the cannot be convinced to come to the "Rome of the West," would you pursue Bob Bradley?
I really don't have strong feelings either way about Bradley. At his best, he's a very good coach. He did well in Chicago and with LAFC. He sure moves around a lot and doesn't always leave on good terms. He's abrasive. But he has soccer smarts. He definitely understands MLS and youth development. I would definitely prefer him over yet another second division Euro coach.
Since CITY hasn't posted any highlights or press conference videos (yet) for the Colorado Rapids match, here is the MLS full match highlights video, with the Teuchert-Klauss debacle in all of its glory.
OK, I can't go without a comment on Matt Baker's report. This is why Lutz needs to go, too. If the Lutz comments imply "one more chance," what Lutz effectively is saying is that it's OK for Mellberg to punch fans in the face 11 times in a row, but 12 would be too many.
Lutz needs to make an announcement one way or the other. It's the dithering that is killing us. Shit or get off the pot. Fire Olof or make the announcement that you are keeping him and let's move on. But the suspense doesn't help anyone! Another thing, I think the players/coaches have missed a real opportunity at strong messaging to the fans recently. I believe it is Timmerman, who has asked in press conferences if they had a message to the fans. What a great question for these guys to be able to come out and say something to help inspire the fans to stay with them, but they can't come up with a coherent message. It's all blah, blah, blah. I think Lutz should be making a similar statement.
