That sure looked like a push in real time. Haven't seen a clear enough replay yet to see if it was really there.
I know there are some culture things with Japan and dissent at times, but #16 didn't appeal at all in real time.
57' - Refcam giving the best possible view of the incident and showing why it's a good goal (and highlighting good positioning)
Which team’s fans are chanting the same thing the whole game? What is it? (Not referee question, just curious. And annoyed)
He did not. #8 did, directly to Elfath. Several other players did by throwing their arms up generally. But the pushed player did not appeal.
66' - Not sure what's going on there with the mechanics of the offside decision. Is Elfath ignoring the flag because of the attacking chance?
Interesting on the offside decision. Atkins was confident and put the flag up. But Elfath delayed the whistle considerably.
I've given up on trying to understand what the mechanics of calling offside are anymore. That seemed like one that was clear enough that it should have been called right away. Of course, I say that while looking at a still frame image.
I think it's fine to delay, notwithstanding SAOT; still images mislead on how easy/difficult a decision is. But for the flag to go up and go unrecognized for that long is not good.
Perhaps Atkins had the technology working for him and used it the right way but Elfath reverted to recent protocols? Or maybe Atkins was just confident on his own to call it? Either way, yes, surprised Elfath delayed particularly after putting his whistle to his mouth. Old (yet still relatively new) habits can die hard.
Play was stopped for the injury. Edit: https://theifab.com/laws/latest/the-referee/#powers-and-duties (Injuries)
With all the new stuff, sort of forgot about 8 seconds. Japan keeper had the ball for at least 14 seconds at 75:33.
I think you can say that his higher foul bar and priority on flow is helping to produce the spectacle, to use a few buzzwords. If the proverbial plane is landed, I think Collina & co. will be quite happy.
83' - That's fine for a YC, but starts to ask questions if he can get away with this high bar for much longer.
Great great YC for that reckless challenge. No pretense of playing the ball. Loved how Elfath had the YC out immediately and from distance.
