It could conceivably be applied in other circumstances but simulation seems like the primary one. As borne out by the rule only being used for simulation in this tournament
To expand on this point, leading French site lequipe.fr didn't run with Deschamps' complaints. It did ask two former FIFA referees (Ennjimi and Derrien) about the penalty, and both agreed with Barton's decision.
Like I said in another thread, I'm way off with travel and only just catching up. Has it been discussed in this thread yet that using VAR for attacking free kicks was explicitly discussed at some point in the not-so-distant past? Didn't Collina suggest that VAR could be used to reverse attacking free kicks just like corner kicks? I'm thinking this was in the December or January timeframe. Then we never really heard about it again. The corner kick move got ratified and became official, but the free kick one didn't. I'm with @RedStar91 here, having just watched. That's a VAR intervention.
if so, it is extremely perplexing—not only is VAR looking at a foul outside the PA, but it’s getting reversed without an OFR and without an announcement?
https://youtube.com/shorts/NqxoK3-xlpE?is=Nh7MfMXqQSdNfc23 Is that a hand ball? If it's a handball first then it's no pen? Just wondering what you refs think
https://youtube.com/shorts/_RG-ck-VCms?is=5amP0nOT4Qdc_KZq Wider angle According to IFAB Laws of the Game, the legal boundary of the arm ends exactly in line with the bottom of the armpit. Any contact on or above this line is permitted, while contact below it constitutes a foul. Looks like a Jordan Pickford foul on Van Dijk scenario Offsides before red card worthy foul. Offsides first so no foul... In this case hand ball before foul
Which assistant? I'm told that the referee cancelled the free-kick on the advice of his assistant. Looked a strange one though.#FRAESP#FIFAWorldCup https://t.co/ZBNCg55Z8f— Dale Johnson (@DaleJohnsonBBC) July 14, 2026
To be fair, that’s not how the Laws of the Game define the part of the arm that isn’t considered handball.
Is it not considered handling because it didn't hit his arm below the armpit, or is it not considered handling because his arm was next to his body? To me, it looks like the ball hits his arm just above the elbow (below the armpit), with his arm tucked into his body.
It's not a handball because he didn't deliberately handle it. And accidentally handling and getting a PK/SPA doesn't count anymore.
It looks accidental. But technically there is an argument to be made that the ball wasn't deflected, nor a point blank pass/shot in which he couldn't react and Lamine's movement is completely voluntary which resulted in contact with his arm.
I am going to be pedantic here, but doesn't Lamal move his body deliberately into the path of the ball leading with his arm? To be clear, I'm not arguing that this is a missed call. I'm more arguing, or asking the question, is this a more deliberate handling than when a player's arm happens to be away from his body (due to natural balancing), and the ball happens to hit the arm when there is no reaction time to move the arm out of the way? These types of handling seem way less deliberate than what Lamal did.
The corner kick move was unofficial for a bit in certain leagues until it became official. So, I think that's where we are here. Collina seems to be obsessed with not having "unfair goals" allowed. I watched the whole game. But apparently Twitter also mentioned that there been another free kick in this game overturned "on the advice of the assistant referee." Anyone have recollection?
Because it is not within protocol. Before the law change, corner kicks were magically changed to goal kicks in certain leagues and competitions and know knew "why.
I thought URU, PAR, and ARG did get automatically qualified into WC2030, along with MAR, ESP, and POR.
According to this and other articles, they're all auto qualified but will play through the qualifiers anyway https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...ation-argentina-uruguay-paraguay/90824107007/
Long time lurker here... Came across a fan video that pretty clearly shows Barton got advice from AR2, not the VAR. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DaySxj7s4c2/?igsh=MXFxZWdoYWRtOGFwag==
Are you suggesting Barton is that clever enough to think of pointing to AR2 to hide that he got VAR assistance on the play? I was honest and stated this was my first thought as well. Upon going back via DVR, I posted (as did others here) that not only is he pointing at the AR but so were the players.
I love sore loser whiner Deschamps doing the “we deserved to lose, but hey how much did that ref suck today, but I’m not blaming the ref for losing, it’s just a coincidence that I’m just saying he sucked when we lost” thing that has been so common nowadays.
Intuitively, and based on precedent, I get that. But the LOTG give France an out here … If France were to claim Yamal was “moving the hand/arm towards the ball,” along with the rest of his body, is there written guidance that we could use to refute that interpretation? Again - not saying it was handball. Just saying I’d like to be able to show my work, as it were, if I were questioned in it.
