Pinheiro did this to himself by giving the yellow

Courageous but unquestionably correct. Second caution.

This rule sucks. Do simulation cards ever get given outside of the penalty area when the referee sees it?

don't take a dive if you don't want a caution

This will NOT be a fun final ~20 minutes for Pinhiero after that.

It was a clear dive. Sucks for Switzerland, but what can the ref do?

Ruined the game. You can’t dive when on a yellow, but this just feels awful.

When was the last dive cautioned in the World Cup outside of the penalty area?

Not call the initial foul, and not give a yellow card when you make assumptions about the contact and don't actually see it!

I lost count of the number dives that were not carded in this tournament and now we get a game changer!!

The question, then, for y'all is if that was a good yellow rather than just a foul call on Paredes (assuming there had been contact). Because if there's no yellow, there's no mistaken identity review.

If VAR could give a yellow in ANY other situation (or cancel one) this would feel better.

This is going to turn into a massive thing about the VAR review and subsequent caution as opposed to the true debacle, which was the on field initial decision

This mistaken identity caution is a great example of “good in theory, bad in practice”.

    I wrote this yesterday

Absolutely incredible and CORRECT decision. It’s absolutely unbelievable how people have complained for years about the endless diving in soccer. Now a player dives and cheats to get an opponent a yellow card, and because it caused him to get a second yellow, now people whine and complain about it.

Thank God Collina had this added for the WC and I hope it gets added to the LOTG.

I mean this is much of what we've been discussing coming together at once, isn't it. An absolute horror show - combination of a new interpretation of a new-ish rule that had this One Weird Trick that nobody was thinking about, a tournament that's had an unspoken-but-clear ban on 2CTs that you can't avoid because of that rule, and a referee out of his depth and responding with aggression. (And separately the conspiracy theories.) Wow.

Is it really a yellow for a dive? It's a reversal of the yellow given to Paredes. Embolo would not have been carded for the dive in a standalone scenario.

pretty sure you’re going to hear a lot of non-Americans not liking the way it played out.

This is the right call, but the problem is the consequence of a yellow is too harsh. Call me heretical, but soccer could learn something from ice hockey.
