I like it and the game would be better if thaf was more often a red card, but that's a tough sell. I think you can make the argument that all the considerations are there. He is going to be one on one with the goalkeeper.
Because I think by the letter of the law he likely has it right. Even if unpopular. I mean he’s giving a red against the home team in a game they’re winning. Pretty sure he knew it wouldn’t be popular.
Just disagree. Looked like a typical swim move to me to get around a player fouling. But it does look like they are going to be calling it tight.
Yeah that's the thing with the 2nd and 3rd reds. They probably should be reds but they just haven't been in the modern game. Now is that FIFA or Sampiao?
If he’s not fouled, his next touch is a clean shot on goal. At an angle, sure, but clean nonetheless. I like the RC.
The one time I gave 3 pretty standard reds, including a fist to the face that was more egregious than the one here, was the last time I centered that league. We'll see how Sampaio does.
WHY DID THIS GAME HAVE TO BE MIDDLE OF DAY WHEN I CANT WATCH Lahoz is smiling in a Spanish villa right now
First look, I thought the same. There's cover. But watching it on replay, there really isn't. And the attacker could have gotten to the ball and had a shot. Not a good one, tough angle, but I guess it's "a goal scoring opportunity". (that I wouldn't expect them to complete)
The normal way refs chicken out of the 3rd red is to say it's not going toward goal. You can't give 3 reds when 2 are borderline and expect FIFA to be happy. The reason I say the 2nd was borderline was the initial contact was wrist or forearm on shoulder.
I just see as part of the swim move, and NOT Violent. (but I've always been told I was more of a "players' ref")
Same. I think it's a great DOGSO. But I'm just not used to it being given so that skewed my initial reaction.
Unfortunately I had to go to Reddit for the replays but I was surprised you guys were saying this is possibly not DOGSO. There’s no other defenders within 15 yards, it’s 20 yards from goal, why… because he was in line with the corner of the goal box vertically instead of going straight beeline towards the center of goal?
Having now seen the snapshot for the third one, I don't think any are borderline. Getting philosophical for a moment... Sampaio knows he's a candidate for the final. He wants to avoid controversy at all costs, if possible. He gives the first DOGSO because it's literally out of the textbook. Easy. So far, so good. You can tell he sort of doesn't want to give the second one, but I suspect FIFA is particularly sensitive in instruction with blows to the head right now. And when a top VAR sends him down for something like this that is off-the-ball, you know that they are following instruction. Even if it's reluctant, he's giving this 100% because he thinks it's what FIFA wants. He didn't even call anything live, of course he wasn't looking for this. Then the third one. That screenshot above shows it's just an incredible spot. It's the right call. I am sure Sampaio must be thinking, at that point, "you've got to be kidding me" because no one wants to give three red cards in any WC match, nevermind the opener. But he gives it because he thinks it's a missed KMI otherwise. And he's right. I say all of this as someone who is not a Sampaio fan. I think he likely did, in each individual situation, exactly what FIFA wants this tournament (at least in the group stage!). The question is whether or not the cumulative effect of the decisions and the "this guy gave 3 red cards in the opener!" stuff makes him toxic for a late KO match. It's possible. But I think overall FIFA and Sampaio will be happy with the actual officiating in this match.
I have no problems with any of the sendings off. Sampaio should get another game. Whether he will is another question.
Oh, 100% he will get another game and I bet it will be a big one. Unless something goes very awry in that next one, he's probably nailed on for two KO matches, too. Nothing really went wrong here. I still don't trust him personally, but Sampaio did fine and FIFA will be happy. The only question is whether or not today takes him out of SF/Final consideration, but there are many other factors for that anyway.
