I seem to think I've seen this somewhere among the many threads - that is, Martino partying with the opposition...worse yet, after a loss... Martino and Marshall were seen tossing at the Hilton on Capitol Square with Harkesy and Novak, in addition to other United players Saturday night. They were the only Crew players there. Am I missing something..? D.C.? I thought these guys were all on the same page, sticking together..? Am I overly sensitive, or should these guys be hanging among themselves, getting a chip on their shoulder for all of the stick they're taking, and then taking it out of the opposition..?
I was hoping you had a picture (photgraphic proof). I have a hard time believing Marshall was out after the game, but I can definately see Martino there.
This is not really that unusual. It's not completely uncommon for opposing players to appear at the DCU post-game parties.
What exactly do you want? Purification through Self-flagellation? Martino likely has friends on DC United from the youth National Teams and UVa (Eskandarian and Kenny Arena), are you saying he can't hang out with them after the game when they're in town? If this is what we start demanding of our soccer players (regulating who they associate with on their free time), how attractive do you think it's going to be to become one? A year ago (I'm not sure it still happens now), when the Metrostars would visit the Fire, Mike Magee would be staying under the same roof as two of the Fire's players. Should Mapp and Capano slept in their cars when Magee was in town?
How 'bout at least staying around long enough after the game to explain why your play makes fans long for the days of Mike Duhaney and Jeff Matteo. Nobody's saying anybody shouldn't be able to enjoy their free time -- the problem, specifically with Martino, is that all he seems to get noticed for is his down-town activities -- bbq, hackey-sack, and practicing his guitar with all his free time since he's not bothered by those silly Gold Cup callups...and the fact he's got the same number of goals this season as I do (although he's one-up on me in assists). Of course, if he spent most of the night talking to Harkes, I'm all for it.
If they got some playing pointers it's great. I might believe KMart could learn 2-200 things on the game from either Harksey or Novack. If they learn to play with their intensity - they would be all stars. Talent is only half the requirement...
Who gives a $hit who they were hanging out with after the game. Granted it'd be nice if Martino would ever stick around after the game to talk to the media, but I've learned to not expect it. Marshall was around for a few minutes but he isn't the most talkative fella around...
This is a microcosm of life, in theory Martino should've been in the locker room doing and interview owning up for two poor fouls, then should've probably went home and had a quiet night in. However, in practice we all know that this isn't very realistic. Pro athletes for the most part go out after every match, and often with opponents. As I say it's a matter of theory and practice, something life teaches you everyday.
The bigger question is, was Zak there as well? Damn, I thought my Freddy drinking joke was good, but I'm yet to receive any rep for it yet. I thought at least it would get some neg rep from the United faithful.
Of course not. Sipp and Craig could have simply slept in the the far east wing at Magee Mansion, that would have been enough distance.
What time did this supposedly occur. Martino, Harkes, Presthus and Kelly were all at Club 185 at approximately 11:30 pm Saturday night. Fid is right, Martino never stays around after a game. Marshall stayed around plenty long enough to be interviewed, but the media pretty much left him alone. Walt
This post is pretty funny. These guys are out drinking ALL the time. Which is fine, they can do what they want, but it is very entertaining to watch them strut their stuff. Chad Marshall is out plenty, someone earlier doubted he'd be out drinking much. They usually think they are such hot $hit, but for the most part, they hang out with some pretty ugly girls. The sad thing is that Martino seems to be much more worried about how ugly (and thus cool) his cowboy plaid shirts and beard are, rather than the fact that all his potential and promise is going down the tube. If you happen to know someone hanging out in their posse on a given night and go over to say hello, most of the players will completely ignore you as if you aren't worth their time. I guess when you are in last place in your conference, you have the right to be too cool for school. On another note, it is not uncommon at all for players of opposing teams to hang out after matches. Since year 1, it has been commonplace.
I wouldn't expect any neg rep from DC fans for making Freddy drinking jokes. Check out this Barra Brava banner:
I couldn't give a ******** about what players do off the field. It's their ********ing business. On the pitch is all anyone on here should be talking about.
So going drinking on a Friday night is contributes to a good performance does it? Certainly working so far.
a) Is there any evidence this does? b) What difference does it make whether it's because the player's partying too much, or lacks ability? It's up to the player to do something about it, and it's up to the Crew to replace him with someone better if they have him.
1) Is there any evidence it doesnt affect performance. It certainly impairs driving ability the next day. 2)Thats the problem, we dont have anyone better.
