As an Australian, this news disappoints me. I have had the pleasure of listening to Martin Tyler commentate for SBS for the last 5 world cups, i will miss it.

Saying that, for those that dont know him, Martin Tyler is by far the best soccer commentator on the planet. Americans will enjoy listening to him during the world cup.

Well done ESPN. Don't fix what ain't broke. Soccer fans enjoy a good announcer. The casual fans won't really care, but it doesn't hurt to put quality in that case for those that do.

The haters will continue hating and add "British announcers" to list of things they hate about soccer, and then go watch that British guy on American Idol.

Great choice! Tyler is an excellent commentator and I always enjoyed listening to him on Sky.

And while I don't know to what extent this spells the end for JP Dellacamera, John Harkes, Tommy Smyth, Bob Ley, Marcelo Balboa, Ty Keough, Jack Edwards and the other soccer commentating clowns at ESPN, you'd certainly have to say that it's a step in the right direction.

I take it you've never heard John Motson ;)

Tyler runs him a close second.

    Avoid Andy Gray....

He was such shit for the Euros. The only players who could knowledgably comment on were current EPL players.

Personally, I'm sick of hearing someone babble random talking points in games while calling the game wrong.

I seriously doubt he'll be chosen, mostly because a large part of the U.S. viewership would have trouble understanding his accent.

Well, um, I'm pretty sure Martin Tyler won't be doing PbP on all 64 games of the tournament, so ESPN will have other commentators calling games.

I'm sure JP Dellacamera and John Harkes will be among them, and deservedly so.

Bob Ley will be one of the hosts for the tournament, and deservedly so.

i pray martin tyler does games. most of the u.s. based guys are garbage, distracting from the game and spouting useless trivia and missing the moment of the game.

I think I've heard that announcer on FSC's Australian A-League broadcasts.

    Yes You are correct.

His name is Simon Hill. He is british but living here in Australia.

He is a good commentator though, but not quite in Martin Tyler's league.
