    Both out with injuries

Apparently no one will be called in to replace them.

If I missed another thread, my apologies and delete this one.

Major bummer about Clark. I was hoping he'd be like the Mastroeni of this World Cup - a great young midfielder who never played in qualifiers breaks out in Germany.

Clark was hurt while with Valladolid.

Wow, really shaping up to Martino vs. Dempsey.

that sucks. i think clark is by far the best young central midfielder the United States has produced since Claudio Reyna. My club coach growing up, Brian Kohen, moved down south and coached Clark. He said the guy is without a doubt the best young player in the states. This coming from a guy who coached Chris Rolfe as a youngster. If anyone truly knows soccer its Kohen, and I believe Clark will make the necessary push to make the World Cup squad.

Neither was on the roster announced last week. Seems Arena is simply explaining why they're missing.

Is this the same injury from when he got hacked in that friendly game?

Really hurts a team whose starting central midfielders are knackered up.

If we end up going with a midfield of similar vein to the one use in Scotland,
    it'll be three and out.

That leaves Dempsey and Adu to fight it out.

Hopefully Clark can get in a March friendly.

I'd bet on Adu before Martino whose only effectiveness lately has been
    on the wings.

    Huh
Noone is mentioning Marshall. This kid is a great young centerback. I'm sorry to see him miss Nats time even if he is too far down the depth chart for this Cup. Chad should be a fixture in the future.

They were on the roster two days ago. Bad news for both of them. Those of you saying that Clark will impress later, when will that be? There is no MLS before the March European friendlies, which are literally Clark's last chance. So unless Arena is already in love with Clark enough to give him time in the European friendlies, which he has shown no sign of, Clark is through. His best hope is for crappy performances from Dempsey and Carroll.

Given the health situation of the central midfielders I wouldn't count any
of the talented players out that this point.

Carroll is competing for the backup sport to Mastroeni. Some overlap but
Clark is a bit more flexible.

    Adu and Dempsey though...

Where is the person who will post about further slights to Herculez Gomez and why he wasn't called in to replace players who don't remotely play the same position he does?

Oh, it is still early out in LA.

I'm just stunned that no one has accused Bruce of kicking Rico in the ankle.

I think this is a totally valid point but for sure I'm disappointed not to see Clark in any of these friendlies.

RE: Dempsey & Martino, I thought I detected some actual chemistry and/or understanding when they played v. Panama w/Carroll behind them. I'm not putting those three in the starting XI or anything but I look forward to seeing if this can develop.

I generally agree with MF on this one. If you haven't received a cap in qualifying, you're obviously not high in Arena's pecking order. Arena is also not going to select someone for the WC roster unless he has had some experience with the national team. People seem to forget that Mastroeni had 9 and Beasley had 10 caps before WC2002. If you're not in this camp, then you won't play in the upcoming friendlies. The March friendlies will likely be dominated by Euro-based players and the top MLS players. After that, there's just not enough time or opportunity to win a spot on the roster.

tendonitis is generally an over use injury...

sounds like marshall was trying to get into the best shape of his life...

still he was way down in the pecking order....

I'd suggest we'd see him in februrary, once the tendonitis clears up

I guess Martino was effective when he scored that goal in his last game, but I do agree he's been better out wide for his club.

He's kind of like a poor man's Donovan. Don't know where to play him: middle, wide right, or up front. Has played all three. Still a longshot to make the squad but gives more versatility than the other potential RM's (save Dempsey) and could fill in if Landon gets hurt.

Mid Battle: Reyna, JOB, Convey, Pablo, Landon are shoe-ins (Lewis as as a D). That leaves 3-4 spots open.

Battle: Ralston, Quaranta, Dempsey, Carroll, Martino, Adu.

I think it was deemed a 6-week type injury and it took place in early December (3?), I believe ... maybe the end of Nov (going off memory) ...

The interesting part of your battle is that both JOB and Reyna are hurt. I think we finally are going to have to say that a healthy and game-fit JOB is a long-shot. There are a lot of midfield questions, that's for sure.

6 locks for midfield...no one is out to injury yet...

    donovan
    beasley
    convey
    reyna
    o'brien
    mastroeni

given 8 is the magic number, the big question is whether arena goes a 2nd pure d-mid....

    AND

whether there's a pure RM in the equation...

say arena wants carroll to cover for mastroeni...

and wants a RM out of the ralston/noonan/quaranta/whomever...

this leaves the likes of dempsey on the outside...

health questions in may with reyna and o'brien raises a bigger problem, since there's NO other guys in the queue who play like these two

Are you slotting lewis as a defender? He'll be in Germany without a doubt.

yes, lewis is my starting left back....

he adds flexibility behind beasley and convey....

rigth now, donovan doesn't have a real back-up, although convey might be the guy in 6 months...and in a couple years, adu would be the guy...

arena's toughest choice is how to cover all the roles, but I think in doing so, the mastroeni and donovan back-ups might not exist...particularly if a true RM is on the roster..
