Ok, I was able to actually catch a good portion of the today's scrimmage. *yawn* But more interesing than thaI on the sidelines I met a few folks. One of which was the Spanish agent Antonio, who represents Milton Reyes, Simotinkopoopoo (KC) and this Rosa kid from Spain, He says that DC is gonna sign Mario. They gave a first offer that he declined, but have come back with something that the agent feels pretty good about,
Damn, that would be quite a scoop. Interesting. Was it as bad as it looked? Also, were they wearing black shorts with the white tops, or all white?
1) It looked pretty freakin' bad, but I only caught the action after the 35th minute mark. The bottomline, as I state in the other thead, is that there's NO ONE creating anything in the middle. It's all up one side, play the way your facing, oh geez better kick it hard stuff. 2) All white, with no numbers. Hard for me to tell who some of our guys were.
... MARIO ROSAS, who had been on trial first with the MetroStars and then with D.C. United, has returned home to Spain and will not be signed by Major League Soccer. ... From today's New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/03/10/sports/soccer/11SOCC-PLUS.html Yep, pretty much signed. Ha.
I'm guessing that the Rosas' agent is just talking up his client. He wants him to appear as if he's marketable in the US as not to hurt the kid's ego. Unless New England signs him, I don't expect we'll see him with the Black & Red anytime soon. Didn't Ray also mention that he wasn't going to be signed? Ray's all about the Russian, right?
I'm just telling you what his agent said to me on the sidelines yesterday. I asked where the kid was and he told me he was back in Spain. Tim's probably right, most likely just an agent talking up one of his clients.
I'm seeing this a bit differently from you all, or maybe just very slightly differently... Basically, the one quote that stuck out in my mind with Ray about Rosas was that they were turned off by his demands. In turn, Ray said they were no longer pursuing him. Isn't it possible that what is going on here is good ole' fashioned poker. Maybe Ray really wants the kid but his price was just way to high. In turn, Ray states publicly that his price is too high, and, for that price, MLS will not sign Rosas. Behind the scenes, his agent extends an olive branch to MLS/DC and the negotiations continue. With Ray's comments, it sounds to me like he's got hand...no apparent pressing need to sign the kid, serious financial constraints, and the kid is totally devoid of opportunities as far as we can tell. Hence, it makes total sense to me that MLS/DC will play hardball. Then again, maybe his agent is just there watching Milton and attempting to "save face" for Rosas. But that seems like a big stretch in view of the possibility of ongoing negotiations. Tim
If negotiations were truly off why would the agent still be in Fl and hanging around DCU? Wouldn't he (or shouldn't he) be working on the next deal for his client? I'm just tossing this out. K
One of his clients plays for KC, according to Bambule GK, which would give him good reason to be at that game. And since most teams are in Florida at the moment, it'd make sense that he'd be in town working with many of his clients.
To sign or not to sign, that is the.... Either way, sign or no sign, I'd feel much more comfortable about Mario if there was some positive/negative commentary about his performance. I don't remember reading anything about Rosas' performance (good or bad) other than he played in the match against Chicago. If we do end up signing him, I just hope we don't sign him because he's a good player, especially if he's not what we're looking for. Give Sarachan credit for not buying something that he doesn't think is necessity. I know this is preseason and somethings don't always mean what they appear, but I am getting a little nervous about all of the turn over on the team. I think we're all cautiously keeping our faith in Ray. He's done it before. But I can't help but wonder if the Mutany's success was a fluke or part of Hudson's masterplan. -Ted
Reyes' agent was definitely there abd talking to DC mgmt. I did not know he was also Rosas' agent. IMO, Rosas was pretty good against Chicago. The Russian striker has shown little. He works hard and is a smart player (good runs) but isn't really big or fast and his finishing has been poor. Also, United needs to do something in the midfield becuase Marco is very out of shape and has been awful in all three games.
Re: To sign or not to sign, that is the.... I'm so confused unless in P 2 you mean Hudson.Kasper and in P4 you mean the Fusion.
Re: Re: To sign or not to sign, that is the.... P2 should be Bradley, who didn't sign Rosas when he tried out with the PATHStars.
Re: Re: Re: To sign or not to sign, that is the.... Sorry about that, Lanky134's right, I meant Bradley, not Sarachan... and Mutany should have been Fusion... ...I was thinking of the Metroscum just before I wrote Sarachan and must have thrown me off. To late to correct my post
Good question. I'd say that since the signing window in Wurope has closed down, Rosas has fewer places to go, and most of those places would not pay as well as MLS can. Maybe he should look at the Mexican league, but it doesn't seem like he is for one reason or another. In some ways these negotiations seem similar to what we did and the Burn are doing with Nunez.
OK, this is an interesting and quite reasonable/plausible line of thinking. Basically, we talked for about 10 minutes. I was (if you haven't read my game report) pretty negative in my comments, not knowing who this guy was... He was perfectly happy to agree and we both talked about the SERIOUS lack of midfield creativity. It was at that point that he says to me that they (DC) are gonna sign Rosas. I looked at him funny and he says that he represents him, along with Milton Reyes and Simotenkov (sp?). At any rate, he said (almost exactly): "They gave me us an offer, but it was no good. Now I've come back and we are close. Very close." So, again, take it for what it's worth. He was definitely there still talking to DC. I watched him go over to the DC bench after talking to some of the players.
