Marcus Hook FC has been created by Sons of Ben, a supporters' group which has pledged to retain at least 75% control of the team’s ownership. The club was founded yesterday in a vote of the board. The supporters had various reasons for their dissatisfaction with the club, but the primary issue appeared to be the glacial pace of progress on the expansion front. Though the club is named Marcus Hook, it will play in South Chester just a mile from the proposed MLS ground. The home ground will be constructed behind the former church hall of St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church on land that abuts Amtrak’s Northeast Cooridor with proposed seating for 5,000 and the hall being renovated into offices and scoreboard stanchion at one end of the park. Andrew Dylan of Dewey, Pullda, Fastone, LLC has been secured as the project architect. Currently, the board is looking for 1,000 people to pledge financial support by the end of July and the group will go ahead with applying to play in the Frank’s Soda League South for the 2008-09 campaign. Chairman Dr. Jimmy Norton noted that, "Everyone knows we'd rather be supporting an MLS side, but many external voices have led to our decision, namely Futbolitico87 and his noted soccer brain." He continued on stating that the club would be done the right way from the bottom up and that no expense would be spared in order to get the team promoted through the league structure. Disclaimer - The above information is 100% false and created to show the silliness of Futbolitico's posts and boast that he has a soccer brain. Added at 11:40am
What is this Soda league? Is it like an amatuer or minor league? If I support Marcus Hook FC do I detract from my support of the Chester team? I'm in south philly so anything down here is welcome.
I'll have to tell my 85 year old neighbor about this. He was raised in 'The Hook' and has the Confederate Flag waving all year. He'll appreciate the good news.
Frank's Soda League has a North and South Division, the winner of each get's promoted to the Quaker Oats League (who's winner gets promoted to the Ellio's Pizza Conference). The PDL is the step above that.
Is the rumor true that they will be having an open try out for players? I hear that Steve from bayshore was going to come down and tryout. I think he would be a great addition to the team.
Being an Ex-Pat in love with the game who is originally from Philly, I got a great laugh out of this! Since I've lived in either Texas or Germany (mostly Germany) most of my adult life, I haven't been into MLS, but if we get a team, I will be then!!
I disagree I believe a big puggle mascot that has a face that can be punched numerous times would be a better choice for a mascot.
ooooooooo....a large gentleman in a bear suit could drive around the pitch in a Prius to really rev up the fans. He'd be quite suitable for punching, as well.
