Right, of course, you are deranged if you believe the best American youngster in the league is capable of competing with foreign counterparts. My mistake, I forgot there is a large segment of our fan-base who laps up the rhetoric Garner and his cronies are selling about the foreigner invasion into MLS. No, this is good! Decreased opportunities for our players will make our NT better. We already see this evident in NT results the last few years where our NT has made such big improvements! I should know that Americans need to wait their turn, and move to a more American-friendly place like Germany once their contracts are up.
Right on cue, the old they have to “EARN” minutes response. Becoming a cliche on here. Carleton dominated the entire U17 cycle for the US. He played well in USL 1.5 years ago as a 16 year old. He played well in the one US Open cup game last year. He played well in preseason. He’s played well and gotten positive reviews just about every time he’s stepped on the pitch, whether in youth or professional settings. Does it mean he isn’t without faults? Nope. Does it mean he should start over Almiron, Villalba or Barco? Nope. But he’s earned the right to see relatively consistent minutes in MLS to see how he will perform. If Carleton was crap in USL or in preseason for ATL I think folks could make an argument that he isn’t ready. That isn’t the case though. Carleton was far more influential than Weah the whole U17 cycle. Tim is getting PT for PS freakin G, and Carleton can’t get more than a scrap minute in blowout games for ATL? Say that out loud to yourself and see if that makes any sense.
I think this is the reasonable point of view right now. Folks aren't asking for Carleton to start over the attacking trio of Almiron, Villalba, and Barco. They're asking for Carleton to start if those guys aren't available (which is true now with Barco's injury) and certainly as an option off the bench. And not for 1 minute. Fontana and Durkin came on in the 77-80 minute range this week. That's enough time to influence proceedings and prove yourself. We can't expect a player to "earn" more playing time with only a minute or two. I've been cautioning for a few weeks that we're really early in the season. I have more faith in Martino that others as he's always been known for giving youngsters a shot.
Paxton Pomykal told me after #FCDvSEA last night that he is no longer going to U-20 camp this week. Have to think that means he’ll play a role this weekend vs. Portland.— Carter Baum (@CarterBaum) March 19, 2018
I thought he looked terrific in his minutes. He's ready for a start and as good as Hayes has looked both he and Ulloa are fairly similar to Gruezo. With Acosta still out Pomykal could be a better replacement and add more possesion and offense.
Wish I had tuned in before MLS Live stops streaming matches for free. Hope this guy comes out of nowhere and gets minutes alongside Acosta; not as an alternative.
As I suspected....................... I spoke to Paxton Pomykal last night. He said it was still questionable if he was going to the US U20 call-up due to injuries within the FC Dallas squad. #FCDallas— Arman Kafai (@ArmanKafai) March 19, 2018 However................ Clavijo: "I’m excited for Paxton. Going to the U-20 camp was a very important opportunity for him. This means that Oscar plans to have him in the 18 for our game against Portland. Oscar feels more & more comfortable with him. It shows he has confidence in him to keep him here.”— Carter Baum (@CarterBaum) March 19, 2018
As noted, US Soccer changed Shaft Brewer's affiliation on their U20 announcement. Fingers cross that this means he's being loaned or signed by LAFC. Just noticed this while looking at the USA U-20 roster announcement. Shaft Brewer Jr, former FCD academy member who has been with LAFC for the preseason, went from being listed as unattached to being apart of LAFC. #FCDallas #LAFC pic.twitter.com/yitGkskCWV— Arman Kafai (@ArmanKafai) March 19, 2018
