At the SuperDraft Combine, apparently Justin Mapp made quite an impression. There's an article on MLSnet.com as well as another on TopDrawerSoccer.com. The MLS articles says this about Mapp: The articles are: http://www.mlsnet.com/content/03/combine0114notes.html and http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/NextStep/1042601676/view While everybody talks about Memo, I think the best left winger prospect of this wave is Justin Mapp. Get used to hearing things like that about Mapp, he's going to make the Chicago Fire fans quite happy. -Tron
oh yeah i am shaking in my boots... Where is Chris Albright these days? He was another one that was GREAT at meaningless games.
I'm in your corner I have a feeling we'll come to regret the trade as well, I can't stand short term thinking at any time, particularly when it comes to young players. I'd like to say that I hope I'm wrong, but if Matt can improve the USMNT in a few years, than I won't be able to keep my fingers crossed that we'll win this trade, the USMNT always comes first, but still, it's quite depressing. Let's just hope that Dema is good enough to make the pain as relatively innocuous as possible.
MLS is all about the short term. The cap does not really allow for player development without massive player movement. ST thinking sucks, we agree, but it's the price we must pay for MLS futbol. Justin Mapp did not show good professionalism in training and thus never earned playing time (28 minutes in 2002). A change of scenery will probably be very good. But don't make the mistake that the Kovalenko trade was bad. We got a great deal. I hope Mapp realizes his potential (at somebody else's expense), but the consensus was that he was two to three years away from contributing. GM
If an MLS team concentrates on getting and developing talent, then the fans will complain about how much the team sucks and needs to change. Just look at this board over the past couple of years. Mapp should at least develop into a decent MLS winger.....in four or five years.
I had always hoped to see the title "Mapp shows United the way" in the Washington Post. Guess it will now end up in the Chicago Tribune.
But will Mapp get to play in Chicago with DaMarcus Beasley on the left wing too? Getting Kovalenko was a great move, he's young, talented, has a green card, and is versatile. It was a move we needed to make to help United now. Mapp wasn't contributing here, I wish him well, but Kovalenko is a good move.
I'm not the least bit disappointed by the trading of Justin Mapp. For three years, DC United has been living (and losing) on promising young players. In a perfect world, I'd love to have a player of Mapp's potential on the squad, but with the way MLS operates, it just doesn't make sense. At least not for a team that's three years removed from the playoffs. Getting a player of Dema's caliber now means more than waiting for Mapp to take bloom in a couple of years. For the past several years I was willing, or rather patient, to accept drafting young potential players. I don't think that formula will win in MLS. As much as I hate losing certain players this off-season, I have to give DCU credit for making sound aquisitions that should pay immediate dividends, rather than bank on the promise of a future that may never come.
I think Mapp wil be sensational. That said, I think Hudson figured that he'd better win this year. 3 years in the wilderness is an awful lot of time. You don't want to completely clean out the cupboard of young players, but trading some potential for some now is a no-brainer for a team with our recent fortunes.
