The bacon thing is just an extension (and a joyous one, at that) of the whole farm to table/fork thing. Farmers markets are the fastest growing segment if the grocery industry. I don't think it's bacon so much as damned good, and preferably local, bacon. Same thing is driving the (even more glorious) craft beer industry. Plus, a summertime BLT is simply sublime.
Take out the L as well. Why ruin a perfectly good bacon sandwich by putting other stuff on it apart from HP sauce. Having said that, bacon in this country is terrible.
No, not just bacon flavor. Adding bacon to everything. Even that's not so bad, it's mostly people's reaction to all things bacon. Btw, I never said bacon was hipster, but it definately is trendy right now. Edit- if bacon wasn't trendy, there would be no such thing as those make your own bacon bowl thingys
