Arsenal fans are surprised at this signing and have no idea what he's like. Is he any good?? Was it a surprise to spanish fans that he went to arsenal??

Definitely surprising, since it would hve been hard to scout him properly. He is kind of a classic Spanish league keeper -always reliable from what I recall- who has not done anything of great merit in years. I can't figure out what they saw, nor how they were really able to see it, nor why they didn't see the same things in tons of other keepers out there.
I watch La Liga and I thought he did very well last season, but wouldn't it been better if we just signed Frey instead?
It could be a very smart buy. Arsenal needs a second, third goalie, and they may very well find a first. Lehman is good, but Almunia is no cutie. 6'3'', and experienced, always a solid goalkeeper with a strong character. Is he well known? nope. He started in Osasuna, Celta, and Albacete. Albacete was a loan from Celta, as Celta has come down in to second div., he became very cheap to buy, so there he is. Arsenal has made a great move. Almunia is a goalie which will at the very least make Lehman nervous, if not more, and when it shows, and they remember how little they paid for him, they'll be happy. Celta did not have him this year. Cavallero, Argentina's goalkeeper was in the team, as he has been for a while. Cavallero WAS a great goalie. Somehow, something happened to him this year, he became a fluke, making errors and mistakes all over the place. Several games Celta lost just because of him. Where was Almunia? Albacete, on loan, and doing well. Could it be that Cavallero stepped down because of lack of competition with Almunia? maybe. Could Almunia have done better than him? for sure, he did in a worst team and they didn't lose the division. This is what Arsenal gets. I am so surprised at how smart they have become: Cesc (this one will be the best), Reyes (he will be the best a little before Cesc), Lauren(this is smart), Almunia....and only Reyes did cost some real money.
