I am writing some notes for new referees and I looking at mandatory cautions. In the ATR 12.27 Mandatory Cautions it states "As of the publication of this document, there were eight mandatory cautions: 3 in Law 3, 1 in Law 4, 3 in Law 12, and 1 in Law 15".

I have the 3 from Law 3 and the 1 from Law 15 but I can't find a mandatory caution in Law 4 and there are more than 3 mandatory cautions in Law 12.

    Any thoughts my US mates?

The ones I know are as follows:

Law 3: Substitute entering the field of w/o the Ref's permission.
Player changing places with GK w/o notifying Ref.
Any other infringement of Law 3.
Law4: Player re-entering field of play after being sent-off (not the red card send off) to correct equipment problem.
Law 12: Using deliberate trick to circumvent law 12 while passing back to GK,
Using deliberate trick while taking a free kick.
Simulating an action to decieve the Referee (diving).

These three are actually in the IFAB decisions.

Law 15: Unfairly distracting or impeding the thrower on a throw-in.

No problem, the ones in Law 12 are pretty hard to find, I had to be told about them myself.

Hey Crowdie. They're found at the ussoccer website under position papers. I have them downloaded but in PDF so I can't paste and cut them
    Abriged they are
LAW 3 1) player enters field of play without permission
2)player changes with keeper without permission
3)any other infringement such as too many players on the field, replaced player illegally returning to play, too many substituutions allowed,

Law 4 A player who has been required to leave the field of play to correct an equipment problem returns without permission

LAW 12 1)using a deliberate trick to circumvent the law
    2) Player uses a deliberate trick to circumvent the Law at the taking of a free kick
    3) Any simulating activity on the field to deceive the referee (takes a dive, exaggerates an injury, exaggerates the severity of a foul)

LAW 15 unfairly distracts or impedes an opponent taking a throw-in

    That makes 8!!

    Just an aside...

Encroachment on a free kick used to be a mandatory caution, as noted in Law 13, IBD No. 2 in the old book.

Encroachment has always been a pet peeve of mine. I was disappointed to see that it was no longer one of the 8 Mandatory Cautions. I think ignoring it today is not helping the game.

But that is only my opinion.

    The name says it all
The only reason it was removed from mandatory status was to enable quick free kicks regardless of defender positions when the attackers deemed beneficial. It's a bit hard to take a quick kick when the referee has to book all the defenders within 10 yards first :)
