http://worldsoccerreader.com/2010/05/manchester-united-to-play-mls-all-stars-on-july-28th/ "Major League Soccer will announce today that English giants Manchester United will be playing this year’s MLS All-Star team in the annual MLS All-Star game on July 28th at the 70,000 capacity Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. This will be the Manchester-based club’s first MLS All-Star game appearance and the fifth english side to face off against the league All-Star’s." Should be a great crowd, and good to see another huge club at the MLS All-Star game.
Is there even a break for the all-star game this year? The Crew play Houston at home on July 24th then at Chivas on July 31st, I assume most teams have similar schedules.
MLS didn't have an all-star break last year either. They've wised up and eliminated it. It's just like a normal midweek game.
All I ask then is that any Crew players be named only to that extra roster thing that means you get a bonus and recognition but don't have to play in the game. (is this carried over from the previous CBA? never saw it detailed out)
Is there any mention of the U17 SUM cup? Still haven't seen dates for that but I know it was held in conjunction with the All-Star game laster year.
I would expect that maybe 1/3 of the typical premiership match roster even shows up, let alone plays.
Your comment really isn't news or analysis. Take a look at the Man U starting 11. How many of those guys are really even going to be on WC duty? I'm sure all kind of appearance guarantees were built in there, just like every other friendly where everyone says no one is going to play.
There has not been an "All-Star break" since 2006. And even in that year six teams played on Wednesday before the Saturday All-Star game. No team, however, played again until the following Saturday so that really was a break. In 2007, there were five league games on the weekend before the Thursday All-Star game and then four more games on the Sunday after. In 2008, there were four league games the weekend before the Thursday All-Star game and then four more the Sunday after. In 2009, there were seven league games the weekend before the Wednesday All-Star game and six games the weekend after. This year has five league games the weekend before the the Wednesday All-Star game and a full eight games the weekend after. The All-Star break is no more.
Looking at the Man U roster: GKs - none going to world cup DF - Evra and Rio Ferdinand going, and thats it MF - Maybe Carrick makes the WC roster? Maybe Anderson. Definite Ji-Sung Park, definitely Nani Forward - definitely Rooney, and almost certainly no one else. No reason at all to expect their lineup to be a bunch of schlubs. Very few of their players are going to the WC.
I don't think so. Here are the last four opponents. Everton starters in 2009. All of those were regulars if not always starters for Everton the previous season. Code: GK 24 Tim Howard DF 3 Leighton Baines DF 2 Tony Hibbert DF 5 Joleon Lescott DF 4 Joseph Yobo MF 17 Tim Cahill MF 26 Jack Rodwell MF 25 Marouane Fellaini MF 18 Phil Neville (c) MF 21 Leon Osman FW 9 Louis Saha West Ham in 2008. A little more mixed but some of their big names were out there. Code: GK 1 Robert Green DF 2 Lucas Neill (c) DF 5 Anton Ferdinand DF 27 Calum Davenport DF 40 Joe Widdowson MF 8 Scott Parker MF 11 Matthew Etherington MF 17 Hayden Mullins MF 20 Julien Faubert FW 9 Dean Ashton FW 12 Carlton Cole Celtic in 2007. Pretty much the same mix for Celtic Code: GK Artur Boruc D Lee Naylor D Mark Wilson D Stephen McManus D John Kennedy M Scott Brown M Massimo Donati M Aiden McGeady M Teddy Bjarnason F Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink F Scott McDonald Chelsea in 2006. I'd say that was pretty close to their first team. Code: GK 23 Carlo Cudicini RB 14 Geremi CB 20 Paulo Ferreira CB 26 John Terry (c) LB 18 Wayne Bridge DM 5 Michael Essien CM 13 Michael Ballack CM 8 Frank Lampard RW 24 Shaun Wright-Phillips LW 11 Didier Drogba CF 7 Andriy Shevchenko
What about Wes Brown? Vidic? So, they definitely lose Evra, Ferdinand, Park, Nani, and Rooney, and possibly Brown, Vidic, and Carrick. (Isn't Anderson injured?) There will be plenty of players not going (Van der saar, Berbatov, Giggs, Fletcher, Scholes, Valencia) but that's a lot of talent going to the cup.
Mistakenly thought Serbia hadn't qualified. Wes Brown feels like a long shot to me. We'll know shortly.
AC + grass + gorgeous stadium = fun. Now the wait to get into the stadium may be a tad hot. At least you can ride the rail from downtown hotels/bars before the game and don't have to worry about driving around and what have you.
Brown and Carrick aren't making the England team, IMO. But that's for another thread. As I was perusing TicketMaster, I noticed that the circus will be at Reliant for several weeks before the ASG. The last performance is 3 days before the ASG. Hello shitty turf.
