No takeover? A United "source" tells the Manchester Evening News: "There is absolutely no substance to it.”
Manchester United Newsletter ----------------------------- Monday, July 07, 2003 12:41 The so-called close season is anything but quiet for ManUtd.com with the departure of David Beckham, the arrivals of David Bellion and Eric Djemba-Djemba and the intense speculation about further new players. Here's a taster of the latest news and features on the official site... What The Papers Say Manchester United are on red alert for a £500million hostile takeover bid from another mega-rich Russian following the sale of Chelsea to Roman Abramovich. A Russian multi-billionaire - even wealthier than Chelsea's owner - has begun the process of sounding out what it will cost and the degree of difficulty in purchasing the English champions. United are braced for takeover activity and the key will be the reaction of manager Sir Alex Ferguson's racing friends - the Coolmore Mafia of racehorse owners John Magnier and JP McManus. Your mission - should you use to accept it - is to track down a celebrity and persuade them to pose with you for a photo, while either holding or wearing some United merchandise. Entries so far include one from Reds fan Joselyn Quesada who bumped into ex-United player David Beckham at Disneyland, during his working holiday in the USA. Now it's your turn! Here's one of the many emails the official website received on the subject of summer signings: From: Stanley, Sent: Fri 04/07/2003 11:18 Signing Eric Djemba-Djemba and David Bellion may be a coup for the future, but what we need right now is to strengthen our team of present - and that means filling Beckham's vacant right wing position - and possibly also getting Ruud van Nistelrooy a regular partner. Ricardo Quaresma has been described as a Figo-in-the-making, so if Ferguson can't get the real Figo, why not Quaresma? The link up with Sporting should serve for something, shouldn't it? Paul Scholes bagged a staggering seven goals in six starts, while Ruud van Nistelrooy chipped in with six of his own. January also provided United with their biggest win of the season as a delighted Fergie watched his side give West Ham a 6-0 Sunday roasting in the FA Cup. Ruud and Giggs bagged a brace each, while Solskjaer also scored and Phil Neville even got in on the act. From Soccernet.com: This is extremely distressing. I wish I could shake some sense into the man, but if his wife can't get through to him, I fear bad things are afoot.
that idiot should have never got the transplant in the first place - his getting it meant that somebody with a bad kidney for reaons beyond their control (diseases, etc) had to die. Best is the biggest waste of talent in the history of professional sports, and is now looking to become one of the biggest human tragedies of all time
Oh bugger off with that crap. It's not like Best used his celebrity to try and procure a liver before somebody else in need. He waited, just like everybody else has to. Who are you to judge whether somebody lives or dies anyways... Yeah, Bestie is sick. It's called alcoholism. Millions of people suffer from it. Unfortunately, it looks like the liver transplant wasn't quite rock bottom for him. I fear he won't pull out of it this time... And short career or no, he's still in the top 10 or so players in number of appearances and probably the greatest talent to ever pull on the red shirt. Show some respect.
It's not like I don't want the guy to live or don't liek the guy, but the fact is that George Best got bumped ahead on the list because of his celebrity status, he mightn't have used it (since he seems like a very nice guy) but other people who's sickness is alcoholism are lucky if they get one at all. The fact Best got one quickly because of his celebrity status was a huge topic of discussio na year or so back, remember? Almost everybody said he'd just go on the drink again, but I decided ot have faith in him even if he didn't fully deserve one, and he's let me, himself, and a lot of other people down. Also... alcoholism may be a sickness, but it's one that you can't say "damn yu God, you did this to me" about, like say... nephrosis
Its very sad if he is drinking again. The pub said he had been drinking water, his wife is reported to have said he is drinking again. If he hadnt got the liver someonelse would. At the end of the day he has a responsibility not to drink. If he is drinking, maybe he cant help himself. I hope he isnt drinking.
I don't really think Bestie deserves the benefit of the doubt though anymore. However; even though most of us are shocked and disappointed, the focus should be on helping him overcome this, not piling on (especially if you are a United supporter).
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/headlinenews?id=271480&cc=5901 Kewell says Liverpool are on the up and United are in decline so he went to 'pool. I'm glad he didnt come to United. We need players who have a certain level of intelligence and he is quite dumb.
Didn't Shearer say something similar in the Summer of '96 or so? LOL! You could say this will likely fire up the lads, but I don't think Fergie needs the help anyways.
Two things: First, it's been suggested that Kewell didn't fancy a move to United as he was intimadated by Sir Alex. Such a skulking lazy player would be reamed out daily at Old Trafford... Second, here's Seaman talking about his conversation with Kevin Keegan:
Sounds like Kevin disguised his voice with a Scottish accent and kept talking about what a great club Manchester is.
ronaldinho looks to be on our ship by friday but what do you guys think about the man u link with kleberson---- i dont think hes that great..................... and is ronaldinho gets signed by friday do you guys think hes gonna come to the states for the preseason tour--i doubt it
please try this link http://www.football365.com/All_News/News_Features/story_75361.shtml I know its nothing to do with United but I thought it was amusing and decided to share.
This article talks about United's long-term view on marketing in the U.S. In other news, Giggsy visits Ground Zero. Peter Kenyon will ring the bell at the NYSE. United rouse city that never sleeps
http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/030804/21/e5ksy.html Barthez to play against Sporting on Wednesday but Fergie is now retracting on what he earlier said in that Barthez would definitely start the Charity Shield.
Here's an article about SAF & his run-ins with American media. Testy Ferguson ready to let team do talking I would have loved for SAF utter "f***ing idiot" to the media.
already done. well, kind of. In case you missed it, last year (around October?) , I believe it was at a PLC shareholder meeting. SAF was answering questions from the media, and share holders. To set the "climate", We were not placed well in the table, and our injuries were mounting. Things were not exactly going our way at the time. In the middle of everything, one "fan" stood up, (I imagine he'd been shooting his mouth off to his pub buddies previously), and asked SAF what the hell he thought he was doing, and effectively told SAF that he was rubbish manager and had lost the plot. I imagine the "fan" felt that he was pretty "brave" standing up to Fergie. I bet that feeling did not last very long though... SAF was having none of it and told the heckler that he was a "******************ing idiot". The "fan" was then escorted out. It was beautiful.
Thanks! Great story. I suppose once United have a solid footing in the US, SAF can tell the American media the first thing that comes to his mind.
