Manchester United has offered to Michel Salgado earn the double of what RM wants to pay him for the next years.

    The offer is:

15 million euros free of taxes for the next four years. 3M € each year plus other 3M € for be a free agent.

Real Madrid is negotiating with Salgado and it seems that the RM's offer is:

1.5 or 2 Millions € free of taxes each year for the next four years, plus a bonus each year for games played, games with any goal against .....

Salgado said yesterday before travel to play with Spain NT that what he really wants is to stay in Madrid, that he wants to concentrate in soccer and that his agents is the person that is negotiating with RM, and he don't want to know anything about the negotiations.

Salgado also has a offer not as big but similar of Chelsea, and other important offer of Milan.

I really would like that Salgado will continued in Real Madrid. He is a true Madridista. But i have a bad feeling about all that. I hope that i am wrong.

For all the stuff about being Galactico and so on, Madrid can't compete with that money and won't offer Salgado a "realistic" contract, i don't think. The question is: will he accept much less (but still a lot of) money to stay at Madrid? Not sure, you know ...

salgado speaks english, and having played with Beckham will have an insider's view of Manchester, so I'd say that there's a real possibility he'd go if Madrid doesn't make an offer that's at least close. they would be mad to let him go, but I said that about Makalele as well. This is of course totally different.
1.5 million a year? How much is Roberto Carlos getting?

Roberto carlos gets about double that, I think. Like Makelele, Madrid would be mad in football terms - but it's not really about that, it's more about money (and Madrid's two-tier system: stars and youth-teamers, neither of which category fits Makelele or Salgado). Salgado speaks great English and also was good mates with Macca, who is bound to have told him a few things. I wouldn't be completely surprised if he goes. Don't forget, too, that he is the son-in-law of the EX-president, a man who hates Floretino Perez's guts!

didn't know that about his father-in-law... I hope that doesn't enter into it. Salgado deserves to get paid well. The whole Zidanes and Pavones thing sounds good but it drives me nuts. A good player is a good player.

Zidanes and Pavones sends me crazy too - it's unfair on players like Salgado and Helguera and just doesn't reflect the reality that a team needs guys like them, not just superstars andf youth teamers (lots of whom are just not good enough at Madrid - take Ruben, for example)

I think that "the problem" with Makelele is totally diferent that "the problem" with Salgado.

Makelele had signed a contract for the next three years, and he had to respect his contract.

Salgado will finish his contract with RM in june 2004, he has all the right to negociate a new contract with the club. And in my opinion he deserves to earn more money, because he has played great in the last three years.

I think that RM should pay him, maybe not what he want, but at least not the half of the Manchester offer.

I'm sure that if RM offers him 5M € (2.5M € free of taxes) against the 6M € (3M € free of taxes) of Manchester, Salgado would continue in the club.

Valdano said yesterday in Diario AS:

"We aren't surprised that a player of the level of Salgado has offers of the big european teams. When we finish the negotiations, if Sagado receive a serious and better offer of other team, the club would try to make a effort. We would like that Salgado continue in Real Madrid and that he end his career here."

It sounds very good. We will see if the effort is really good.

And yes salgado is son-in-law of Lorenzo Sanz - RM last president-. When Florentino won the elections, the people had doubts about what will be the relationship between Florentino and Salgado. But three years later nothing has happened, and Salgado sometimes has spoken very well about Florentino and Florentino sometimes has spoken very well about Salgado. I think that it will not be an aspect to consider in the negotiations.

The big problem in the negotiation will be the economic politic of Florentino. We know that with this politic all the stars (Raul, Zidane, Figo, Beckham, Ronaldo) earn the same money 12M € (6M € free of taxes), Ronaldo for example lost money to came to RM. But we don't know what is the limit of the defenders, I doubt seriously that the limit be more than 6M € (3M € free of taxes). Roberto Carlos earn 9M €(4.5M ), but he signed his contract with Lorenzo Sanz. And the times has changed, we have seen how Barcelona has reduce the salary of many important player a 40% or 50%, other teams like Atletic Bilbao, Lazio,... also has reduce the salary of his players.

You're right thet the Salgado and makelele situations are different; what i meant was that in terms of the effort Madrid make to keep them, they may be similar up to a (limited) point. The big question will be the money and what the club will offer and what Salgado is prepared to accept. Madrid pay the top stars very very well, but Salgado as a non-galactico defender might not be able to persuade them to pay that. This could be very interesting. The ex-president son-in-law thing is only incidental and was meant as a joke - but may play a small part, as Perez is obsessed with control.

    Abramovich/Chelsea offers Salgado 18 M € for the next 5 years - fot. This means 3.6 M € - free of taxes - each year.

Valdano said yesterday that "Between Monday and Tuesday we will meet with the agent of the player for initial the negotiations, that we want to have resolute this week. If we cannot reach an agreement, we will not have any problem in announcing that the player is free to search the best team for his future. I believe that it is the best solution for all."

Florentino said the last week "Salgado has the affection and the respect of all the supporters and we are going to make a effort, probably greater of what we can, so that he continues with us because we think that it is right. if we cannot reach an agreement, at least we will have tried it"

Salgado has said "Real Madrid is my first option, i will make a effor but RM also will have to make a effor. It is my last big contract."

All can happen, but i don't see Salgado playing in RM the next year. I really hope that i'm wrong. At least we won't have to wait to much for the resolution.

Well if we plan to sell Salgado, we might as well go all the way. Sell Pavon and Helguera as well. But another 3 forwards or midfielders, and let the Galacticos play a season in Segunda B :)

Seriorsly, we' d be crazy to lose Salgado... but we said the same about makalele. I don't think Minambres is ready to replace Salgado in the first team

Say it ain't so.Not the least bit surprised that MAN U would want this cat,Salgado is a hell of a player who is overshadowed by Zizou,Ronnie,Beckham,Figo etc.He is IMO,very underrated and Real' can't and must not let him get away.

I hope that the reports in Spain are wrong, but it appears Chelski has won the race for Salgado's signature. Apparently he has turned down RM because the multi-million deal by Chelsea is too good to refuse. This is frustrating beyond belief. We can't keep losing defensive players of this quality at this rate. Real do have the money to spend but are uncompromising when it comes to defense. Who will replace him only time will tell. Hala Madrid!!

If RM does lose RM, Perez must wake up and face the reality..... he must forget about the megastar and buy good defenders.

I read today in Diario AS that Hinkel is the player that Real Madrid wants to replace Salgado if he finally goes to Chelsea.

Hinkel is 21 years old, and he play in the Stuttgart, the revelation team in the Bundesliga and in the Champions league this year. Hinkel play in the starting 11 of the German Nationl Team. He is one of the biggest promises of the German soccer.

The article say that Florentino said in a radio program that Valdano had spoken to him very well of Hinkel.

Extraordinary news!!!!! Madrid says today in big words that Salgado will continue in Real Madrid for the next 5 years!!! Great!!!

The text of the new isn't very long, but they say that also Raul and Guti have renew with the club. Valdano say that "They are three players who give identity and maturity to the team. With this decision Real Madrid confirms its desires of which Raul, Guti and Salgado finish their sporting live in the club"

I have more to say about this - if it's true that Salgado passed up a more lucrative offer to play elsewhere, that's a tremendous boost for Perez/Valdano and also for the team in general. He stays because he wants to play for Real Madrid, for everything that means to a player. When people talk about Real of course they mention the 'galacticos', but this is a real team with a desire to work together and win.
    Hala Madrid! Hala Salgado!

Yeah, i was thinking the same. I think that must be frustrating paid the double to a player and that the player does not want to go to your team.

And it must be must be a pride to Real Madrid that players like Michel Salgado, Raul, Beckham, Ronaldo, ..... remain or came in/to the team when the could earn much more money in other teams.

With all my deep respect to the other teams, Real Madrid has the advantage of the weight of history. It's like Brazil in the National team levels, there are other great teams like Argentina,Germany, Italy, but Brazil is Brazil, and a World cup without Brazil isn't the same. Even with Brazil playing bad is always Brazil, and it have the respect of the rivals. Real Madrid is the same at club level, it is the most succesful team in the history of soccer, there are another extraordinary teams in he history of soccer like Milan, Bayern Munich, Ajax. But Real Madrid have a legend around the team, that begins almost at the same time that the Brazil leyend - the late 50s- when Brazil begins to won world cups with Pele, and RM begins to win CL with Di stefano. For That the reason FIFA named Brazil the Best NT team of the history and Real Madrid the best club of the history. If a player have a offer of RM and of other team. Many times they probably choose Real Madrid because its legend and becuase the great players want to play with the great players like happen with Ronaldo or Beckham.

If this is true, then this is the best news of the season so far. I must take my hat off and salute Salgado, who has proven that he has the heart of a true champion, someone who can look beyond his ego and the additional euro, and stay with the team that can offer him the most in footballing terms. To have gone away would not have meant he was greedy, just that like most of us, he viewed success in terms of getting the maximum financial reward for your work and ability, which is nothing wrong in itself.

But if he really has agreed to Madrid at a much lower cost, and the reason is more than just desire to not leave Spain, then he demonstrates some of the artist, the genius, the master craftsman. Someone who views success in terms of developing his craft to the highest level he can, and who pursues the highest professional rewards his craft can get him, rather than financial rewards.

I hope that Perez and Valdano also showed an equal amount of class and made him an offer that he deserves, an offer that proves that while he will never sell too many T-shirts, on the football pitch, which is where it matters most, he is every bit as important a part of the team.
