Man Utd up by one at halftime.

Veron scored in the 42nd minute.

You should put an [R] in the header if you are going to post results in the body. Just FYI.

It was a peach of a goal by Veron though. He flicked it up in the air with his left and volleyed it home with his right from the outside of the penalty area.

Veron - a puzzle wrapped up in an enigma

Sorry about that. Made note of that for future use.

    RVN made it 2-0.

Veron is turning out to be among the best midfielders in the CL, but is one of the worst top level players in the premiership, the git. What is up with this man???

A couple of reasons I can think of but I suspect there are more.

One is that the Premiership is played at a much faster pace and is more physical. Veron gets caught on the ball too often and has to rush his passes and loses accuracy. He's not a physical player, easily dispossessed when caught, and the CL pace suits him much better.

Second, his style is to play the defence splitting pass a high proportion of the time. But Premiership clubs against Utd, particularly at Old Trafford, often play with packed defences and backed up midfields. The result is that these passes are picked off too easily and possession is lost.

I'm sure there are other causes - he does play a very different game to Utd's previous, close passing game which not only makes him less effective but causes Beckham and Giggs in particular to go AWOL and the whole midfield to lose cohesion.

I would like to see Alex play him in the Cantona free role as support to van Nisterooy up front.Whenever he plays Scholes and Veron he plays Scholes in the support role and Veron in midfield. I'd like to see this reversed. Scholes doesn't play well anymore with his back to goal and, imho, is the player that gives the midfield cohesion when he plays centrally.

We need a mobile support striker around a central van Nistelrooy. It would be worth seeing if Veron could do that. He clearly has the ability to score, he loves making those final passes and he has the vision.

    Worth a try I think.
