    1) Do not refer to Landon Donovan as Landycakes. He earned the right to be respected by all US fans after this world cup.

    2) Absolutely do NOT sell him, he is a superstar in this country right now.

From an American perspective I think what's the point? The argument was always that Donovan should transfer to Europe to hone his skills and mental toughness, but he's shown that MLS has done that just fine. Now he's, what, 28? He's got probably one more World Cup cycle in him as a dominant player. The only argument in favor of this is that we can all live vicariously though him as a stud at a big Euro club. As a U.S. fan I think it would be way better for him to stay in LA and help promote MLS, especially as he's probably more famous now than he's ever been.

I did not mean it disrespectfully and apologize if I upset you. As far as I'm concerned that's just his nickname and I always call him that with absolutely no hate behind the usage. That b*tch Cohen may have started it as a diss but it backfired and with several fans it has just stuck and can now be considered a legit nickname.

True story-- after the World Cup game I ordered a "Landycake" at my local bakey--just had the baker do a strawberry shortcake with a Donovan portrait on the cake. It's an appropo nickname cause a cake is "sweetness", just like Donovan on the pitch.

Landon has earned the right to earn as much $$$$$$$ so that he doesn't ever have to work again.

Even as an LA fan, he has given so much to the league and so much to the teams on which he's played that I'm fine w/ him doing whatever he sees fit.

Right, but that's his decision. I just don't see any reason as a U.S. supporter why he should transfer to Europe. If he wants to cash in I have no problem with that, but I don't see any particular advantage for American soccer.

Between DP salaries and endorsements he might be at that point anyhow.

When people knocked him for not playing in Europe it always seemed to be forgotten that he didn't really have the financial need that many other US players had. He's been the face of US soccer for some time, that's gotta pay and will continue to pay.

I wish him luck no matter what he does.

if he stays in MLS, it's gonna be huge for the league and for him with all the new endorsements that should be rolling in. I don't think money is an issue for him. He really values playing here near his loved ones.

In a very roundabout way, it would help the US. No, his skills won't be enhanced in a huge way, although Arena did say that his time at Everton helped him greatly. If he succeeds if/when he transfers, it will help improve the image of Americans generally. Seeing Landon succeed at a high level club (Everton would fit here too) would increase the likelihood that a team takes the "risk" of signing an American player.

I say that as US fan with no MLS affiliation. On the whole, it's probably better for Landon to stay in MLS and help the league grow. Leave the foreign standard raising to Bradley, Altidore, Dempsey, etc.

Man City is one of the few teams I would see MLS agreeing to terms with. They have a history of massively overpaying for players, and it would take a massive offer to budge MLS on their newfound, homegrown "superstar".

Why do you choose to not have a MLS affiliation?

I'm a good 750 miles from the nearest team. Tampa and Miami folded before I really cared, and they were both more than 2 hours away anyway.

I've tried attaching onto a team from a distance, but without ever living in any MLS city, it's hard to really care. I watch games based upon the quality of teams, and whether or not there's a US youth player involved. I'm no eurosnob. I watch a ton of Euro games, but 99% of the time it's for YAs.

    So...

Danny Mwanga looked great tonight! Let's get that application moving. Seitz also looked great.

And if I never watch another Hull City match, I can die happy.

Once I finally get out of this soaking wet oven of a state, I will gladly become a season ticket holder at whatever city I end up in. Seattle is most likely.

Mannie, what if he played for Houston? Would you still call him that "pansy drinking out of a water fountain," whatever the hell that means?

He is a terrific player and I wish him well whether he stays in LA or goes back to England.

No, because he'd play for Houston. He doesn't though.

I believe he's referring to this infamous image which made the bigsoccer rounds a few years back. Even Donovan laughed at it-- i think he made it as a goof.

He can go to Man City which may buy it's way into the big 4 and give him a chance to star in the EPL and UEFA....

how big would that be compared to the Galaxy...I know that sucks..but one of our guys could be a fixture on a major Euro team and get huge publicity

That was pretty damn funny. Hell, still is.

However, Donovan has earned respect. Anyone who doesn't give it to him, well, he'll probably just knock you up.

    +1

That man has done so much for US Soccer, I think it's about time that MLS and US Soccer returns the favor.

Is there any evidence he'd be happier playing for Man City than for LA? I've never ever gotten the impression from him that he really cares all that much about the money.

This would be a good move for Donovan, but Everton also seems keen on purchasing Donovan as well. He'll likely have a bigger role at Everton, but they'll not be able to match the money that 'City will be able to throw at such a signing. The Galaxy will be a much different team should Donovan leave and that will be sad bc it looked like they were putting together a special season. With that said, if 'City makes an offer then Donovan deserves to go.

    Exactly.

The minute he pulls on that LA shirt again, he'll be Landycakes again.

I'd love to see LD go back to Everton, if he decides to head back to Europe. Man City would be a bad move...too much competition for playing time, unrealistic expectations, etc. But with Everton LD would go back to playing for a team that values hard work and determination, not money and flash.
