it occurs to me, given what we may have to endure this coming season, that this might deserve its own thread.

Plus, my brother, who I coaxed into taking his 1st ever Malort shot, and who was angry about it and refused a second shot, and then got pissed at me for trying to get others initiated, has now suggested we do a Malort crawl in the city:

    Isn't "Malort crawl" redundant?

This is my favorite terrible idea recently. I like it even better than drinking 2 of das boots at schnitzel platz a couple weekends ago.

I'm just curious to see if any bartender can actually make Malort palatable.

I said palatable. Malort is stupidly entertaining all on its own.

I've never tried it, and live outside of Chicago. I'm willing to accept donations through the mail though

Wait, can we just make a thread about anything now? Can we just make a thread entirely devoted to whatever the heck we've been doing in the Optimism thread? I'd like that.

Some of the Timbers fans that were in town a few weeks ago are still complaining about Malort on facebook.

I'm thinking we'd need to look more toward the Harry Potter series to make this happen.

Yep, North Avenue. Schnitzel Platz, Edelweiss on Irving Park, and Bavarian Lodge on Ogden are all awesome.

  17. No love for Laschet's Inn , kiddie corner from The Globe? I haven't been there since the original owner ran the place, but I remember all the photos of Karl's (I presume) U-boat shipmates.

It was my first time going and I loved it so much I don't remember any of it. My poor pregnant wife had to drive me home...

I love Laschet's Inn, but the Hansa Clipper is my favorite.

The other day, I enjoyed a delicious dinner and even more delicious beer at the best German restaurant in Chicago-

Laschet's on Irving. Way better than Edelweiss (although Edelweiss is great, too).

Used to be my "regular" place back in the day (when I lived in the neighborhood), when Franz and Ursula owned it, even before it was restaurant.
We would go on holidays and Ursula would just cook for all of us there. It was beautiful.
It is still delicious (go for the Kassler ribs on Tuesdays).
    Best spaetzle anywhere.

Edit: I posted this before seeing the posts of @willydonc and @bunge .

    I guess I would say, I concur.

Did you go to Hansa Clipper when it was just older Europeans (1990ish)? Those were the days.

My other hang out used to be Hüettenbar, as well. Last few times, not so great, though.

I was only considering suburban or near suburban ones within easy striking distance of where I live.

When I lived in Ravenswood/Lincoln Square I used to be swimming in good German places.

I logged many a night at Carola's Hansa Clipper pondering the large German WW1 naval flag.

Huettenbar was good but now it's full of yuppies.

Chicago Brauhaus is always a good time.

I used to live within stumbling distance of all three of those places which was really convenient after the third 2 litre beer.

    Laschett's, of course, is great.

Resi's Bierstube has the best beer garden in the city.

Mirabel was a bit of a hike on CTA but well worth the effort.

And let's have a moment of silence for the late and much lamented Zum Deutschen Eck...

That would explain the flag and the photos...

Hell, I had a about 30 polaroids on the Great Beer Palace's walls at one point. you got a paper (they switched to plastic at some point) viking helmet and your picture on the wall if you completed a "Viking Raid" which was 6 German beers in a certain time. But the bastards started you off with the lighter beer and you finished with the black stuff so it was like biking uphill. Those were some great nights. Well, the ones I remember, anyway...

    Agreed all around.
I was going to say Huettenbar was full of yuppies, but I did not know if that was still a term!

Zum Deutschen Eck, oh that was a place.

    Golden Ox, anyone?
