I would like to introduce our new book, Make This Town Big: The Story of Roy Turner and the Wichita Wings.

In any discussion about where American soccer landscape is today, we cannot discount the effect that indoor soccer, specifically the Major Indoor Soccer League, had in the late 1970s and through the 1980s and early 1990s. While the original stars of the MISL were primarily English, Yugoslavian and Danish, the league did give an opportunity to the American stars such as Ricky Davis, Shep Messing, Dale Ervine and Chico Borja. The MISL also was the only legitimate professional league in the U.S. between the NASL folding in 1984 and
MLS starting in 1996. MISL cities also helped establish the boom of youth soccer participation.

The Wichita Wings, established as an MISL expansion team in 1979, were part of that effect that helped popularize the sport in the Midwest. This franchise was the the equivalent of the Green Bay Packers in that it was the smallest market team in a league consisting of teams from New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, St.Louis, Dallas, etc. Through a combination of one man's dream, shrewd budgeting, great marketing and a rabid fan base, the Wings succeeded and survived beyond anyone's expectations.

We spent over a year interviewing the former players, coaches, front office personnel, owners, fans and others who made the Wings phenomenon what it became. Their stories are told their their own words. We also provide background context and stories through a multitude of sources going back to 1978. We talk about what went on the field...and off. When you take some of the biggest personalities from multiple countries and put them on one team in a one-team city in the early 1980s, well, I'll let you guess what frivolities could occur!

This book, while obviously written about local market's former franchise, may nonetheless be of interest to anyone who is interested in the history and/or marketing of soccer in the USA, indoors or out. The glory days of indoor soccer may be long gone but its legacy is strong!

It is available for purchase through our website http://makethistownbig.com/

    Thank you!
