    It doesn’t matter.

It’s like Bailey’s grandpa has British passport

    Case with Selke is:

    - he is provisionally capped by Germany
-when he was provisionally capped he didn’t have another passport
    - after his 21st birthday, he still play for Germany in Olympic n U21 Euro. And he didn’t have a Czech passport at that time

As far as I know, even many people in the football industry do not know much about the eligibility rules.

Bailey it was because his grandparents weren't born in England
"Leon Bailey does not have an English born parent or grandparent. He is a Jamaican through and through with nothing but Jamaican roots (though he doesn't appear to like that very much, judging from his dialogue with the media, and probably wishes otherwise). He will not qualify for England by ancestry."

can one say the same about Selke's mom or her parents (Selke's grandparents)?

wikipedia for one says that Selke's mother is born in the Czech Republic while his dad is born in Ethiopia.

It has nothing to do with Selke’s mother now. Parents’ identity don’t mean nothing now.

Based on Fifa regulations, if he doesn’t possess Czech passport before he was provisionally capped by Germany

And after 21, he can’t change eligibility anymore. Post 21st BDay, he also played in Olympics n official competitions so he was provisionally capped

Unless he had a Czech passport during that time, then he can change eligibility even he was provisionally capped

The rule is written there. He didn’t apply anything from fifa before the age of 21 n he was already capped by Germany

I have talked to many people regarding this. Basically all who knows the rules know he can’t even play for Ethiopia anymore

    Topic pretty much closed.

I think it’s just a media story , which didn’t have enough info about FIFA eligibility rules

    Rubbish media in Germany nowadays.

so your saying Selke's already permanently capped tied by Germany.:p

wouldn't mind if some other duals don't acquire passport for their other options too and then it becomes too late for them too.:devilish:

Yes. He is already capped by Germany based on Fifa regulations

Only thing is, if he had a Ethiopian or Czech passport before he was provisonally capped by Germany and he did it before the age of 21

    He can change eligibility

    Media are making stories

Exactly the same happened to another player, but I can’t remember who

Muscle injury in the hip area as Selke will be out until further notice. Hertha are unable to deliver an expected return timeline right now

In the past it was enough to be eligible for the citizenship, the player didn't need to have it yet before the 21st birthday. Think of KP Boateng - When he opted for Ghana, he didn't have the passport yet, but was eligible via his father being a citizen of the country.

I'm fairly sure FIFA continue to handle things this way. So in theory Selke could still choose Ethiopia or the Czech Rep over Germany thanks to Ius sanguinis. There is no indication he even considers that though and both teams would be rather poor career choices.

The tricky bit is he played Olympics post 21st and some said it’s official matches according to FIFA

There are some doubts towards that.

But no one seems to say he can switch now. N he still don’t have a Czech passport for now

Didn’t Boateng have a Ghana citizenship before 21st birthday? But I have been told by people who know these rules better than for Selke’s case, he can’t switch anymore

No, KPB didn't have the passport before his 21st b'day. Still doesn't speak a word of Twi.

Dunno about the Olympics, I did not think of that. Do they count ?

BILD: You recently brought up Davie Selke as a possible national player. What else is missing?

Matthäus: "He needs a long phase of being injury-free. With his speed, body size and technique, Jogi Löw would have a great alternative to Leroy Sané or Timo Werner. First of all, he has to stay fit. Everything else comes by itself. "

Yes we need him to be part of a full varied attack, is no good grotzka playing in that position as he doesn't have the movement of a full fledged center forward

Shame that Selke has struggled through this point of the Rückrunde. With 6 games remaining for Hertha, hope he can get it together and score at least 2 or 3 more goals to finish the season on a better note
