Quick FYI that Marcelo Balboa and the Colorado Rapids are scheduled to make a "major" announcement at Thursday's press conference and media luncheon.

Conference/lunch is scheduled for 1:00pm, so expect official news sometime shortly thereafter.

I wouldn't be surprised if the details of this announcement is leaked beforehand... but this is the first thing that I've heard.

    I just read this too.

Hmm... I wonder what it is...

I'd love to see Marcelo in the Black and Blue, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him on the sidelines either.

    This is exciting.

He is going to announce his retirement and it sucks beyond rationality.

I was going to say, they've been signing boys like crazy, I wouldn't think they'd have the room for Balboa, he really should be playing somewhere, but maybe the knee is worse than people know... Shame... But he should Retire a Rapid no doubt...

    Attendence?

Can anyone attend the press conference???

p.s. at this point, I would support whatever is best for Marcelo and his family, regardless of how that affects the fans, Rapids, league, etc....

Why does this suck... why should he be playing somewhere other than his back yard (or some over-30 rec league)... why do people want to hang on to the past so much... this is not Balboa of 1994 (he wasn't even that good back then)... there's a reason guys like Tab, Harkesy, Balboa, Sorber, Burns, Wynalda, etc. are no longer wanted... they're simply not good players any more... the league has passed them by... if MLS is ever going to move forward, sentimental favorites like the aforementioned need to be left behind... if these guys are still able to find work in MLS as players when their physical skills have so obviously diminished, then the level of play in MLS is not as good as we would like to believe... good luck in your retirement Cello...

Balboa wouldn't announce it in conjunction with the Rapids if he were simply going to retire.

At the least, he'll be joining the coaching staff, is my hunch.

I got invited to the press conference, yeah. Westminster, 1 p.m., the 3rd. I'm in school, sorry.

Aside from the possibility of coaching, I'm going to guess that he is going to sign with the Rapids so he can officially retire as a Rapid.

    Are you serious

Not that good back then? Are you a complete idiot? Balboa is the best US defender ever. Get a clue.

I used to really like watching him play, but the last year or so in Denver, it seemed he cared a whole lot more about himself and not much about the team. Team chemistry was NOT good back then. That's not to say he was entirely to blame or anything.

Anyway, my guess is he will not be playing with the Rapids this year, but will be doing the TV commentary for the games.

    OK, first of all...
Everyone is spelling it wrong..it's Chelo.
    :)

The Rapids should do something special for this guy...he was the heart and soul of that team for too many years. The community here loves him...and the man is an absolute soccer icon. His number should be retired, and that's all there is to it.
(SO, whoever needs to be whipped to get this done, can someone let me know?)

Also, i noticed that Playgirl is partnering up with the hottest soccer players of all time. I certainly hope he was nominated for this..he is absolutley HOT. And i wouldn't mind checking out that body in the magazine, thats for sure!

Soccer America thinks Balboa is moving to the broadcast mic. Since the announcement is coming with the Rapids, maybe he'll be the official broadcaster of the Rapids.

The "every week" has me wondering if it's related to the FSW announcement.

Balboa has been one of my favorite players for years, and I'm sorry to see him retire. Solid competitor throughout.

I still have very fond memories of his overhead volley off the post in the 94 World Cup U.S. - Colombia match. Was in the stands that day, and it was the first time I realized that our guys had the potential to really compete on the international stage some day.

I think Balboa will always be remembered for that goal he didn't score, the bicycle off a corner that went inches wide of the post. As much as Celo did for the Rapids and the MLS, that play for me is the first thing I think of when I think of him. There is always the bicycle and MLS goal of the year he did score against Columbus, but on the World's stage, what he did, despite not scoring, was a shout out to the world that we had arrived...

    And they call this "major?"

I sincerely hope there's something more to this.

Maybe announcing a one day signing so he can retire as a Rapid + the broadcast booth announcement?

Nobody has said he's going to play. We're talkinng about him signing for a day so he can retire that same day as a Rapid. Also he isn't 40, he's 35.

They should wire him for sound so he can become the world's first player-announcer. That would rock.

Balboa is going to be the color man for all HDNet broadcasts in 2003, announced his official retirement and is going to be the inaugural member of the Rapids' ring of honor (or something) at Invesco.

According to www.hd.net, there are three bars in Colorado that are capable of showing their high-def programming:

    Brooklyn's (Pepsi Center)
    Legends (Denver)
    Legends (Aurora)

    HDTV

So a year ago I had to replace the old 25 inch 1986 TV and I have a nice 40" HDTV (tube, not projection). The picture, especially with DVD is awesome. Local cable isn't yet HD ready, something they are happy to disguise ("yes you can get HD broadcasts" meaning in the regular format, not in HD format. The ***************s). Direct TV has to this point, only two real HD channels (an HBO and a potpourri of crap channel), so I haven't jumped to a dish...I figured that by now or next fall, one or the other would make a push to be HDTV's preferred service with a large amount of programming that I actually would watch.

    Mabye this is it...

    In the meantime, Legends Denver?

    RLH

p.s. So rapidsfan.com ain't so bad, but do you have the stamina to keep it up, Greenie???
