"Maestro in Motion" - Aly Wagner A very good piece by Mark Zeigler, this is the lead article in the sports section of today's Union-Tribune. Accompanying it is a large picture of her and Julie Foudy really laughing about something at practice. The caption is: "Aly Wagner, the Spirit's top draft pick from Santa Clara, seems to amuse captain Julie Foudy. Wagner is expected to amaze as well - with her vision of the field and skill with the soccer ball." http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/uniontrib/fri/sports/news_1s4spirit.html

she didn't - or at least i don't think she did - in the first game. on the other hand, pickup and someone else did. o yea, pags, the goalkeeper, also had one. it looked incredibly stupid but i'm not going to slag on anyone if they're truly worried aobut saving their brain from too much thumpin'.
A little bit of trivia, from Mark Zeigler's "Sidelines" section of the "Goal!" page.. At the end of "Bend it like Beckham" there is a picture of the University of Santa Clara team, with Jess in it. That was an actual team picture, but with one player airbrushed out by the film's editors replacing her with a likeness of the actress who played Jess. And guess who that player was? Then freshman Aly Wagner!
That was a really nice article. I do take issue with the assertion that youth soccer players in the US play on "pristine fields" For the big games for the best players that might be true, but in general while US players aren't confined to dirt lots or anything like that its sometimes worse to play on some of the uneven pitches we have to contend with.
